    More power needed

    Hi oh Knowledgeable ones!

I have a 84 RRC with 3.5 twin carbs with extractors and pod filters. Dissy has the more modern optical set-up not points. It has duel fuel (gas petrol). 4" lift and slightly oversize tires but nothing ridiculous. She goes great on the flat, but hit a hill and its embarrassing, I feel like I'm driving a model T ford, or worse, a Pootrol! Seriously, should I expect to be passed on every incline by everything on the road, or is there a way to increase the output of the 3.5 V8? I had it tuned recently, but the garage that did it apparently doesn't have the best reputation. Suggestions please!

    Regards

    Jez

Buy an efi manifold and all the bits needed to do the job. (Conversion) OR but a bigarse Holley/Webber and go nuts. Having said all that, take it somewhere (if ya don't know what ya doin) and get it checked. From memory a twin carbed Rangie really wasn't that bad.

My 3.5 '83 with 32's, carbs and points ignition (because the lumenition crapped itself) will pull my buggy on the trailer (weighs a bit over a tonne) up any hill on the Hume highway at 110 all day, providing it's back in 3rd gear (4sp) and singing at about 4200 RPM. In top it's positively gutless, but goes well if you get into it, gotta rev these little motors to get their torque.

    Cheers

I recently did exactly that to a carby '86 high compression 3.5 litre County. A hotwire EFI system off a '93 3.9 (pre soft dash) RRC and a fuel tank, fuel lines and rear pump wiring off an '89 3.5 litre EFI RRC. The steel EFI fuel tank fits in place of the carby tank without any mods needed to the mounts or filler. The EFI wiring and computer fits the '85 with a bare minimum of inputs to make it run. You only need battery power, ignition power, earth and ignition coil negative input from the stock wiring system. Everything else is done by the EFI wiring harness which is separate from the main loom.

You'll have to modify your LPG system to work on a single mixer on the throttle body though. Hopefully you have the small twin mixers that need just a new adjuster, hose and mixer, and an EFI style shut-off relay to cut the injectors. The owners of the County I converted are rapt, the performance increase in the upper rev range is phenomenal.

Oh and it had a later electronic dissy with the magnetic pickup, a Bosch module conversion was the first job needed to make it go properly.

I'd start by checking the camshaft for worn-out lobes, the 3.5 motors are well known for the cams wearing to almost round, result is reduced valve opening thus dramatically reduced power. New camshaft and lifters can breathe (literally) new life into them.

If you have the money upgrade to a new bus turbo diesel with a warranty and you wont look back.
If you have got your heart set on a classic RR thing big and install Gen 1 or Gen3 motor.
I upgraded Gen 1 383 chev supercharged in my RR and haven't look back. Plenty of torque and wheel spin if needed.
