I'm thinking you might benefit from removing the no. 1 spark plug, then connect the lead back to it. Lean the plug against the engine turn it over to make sure you can see spark. Rather than relying on the timing light.
The benefit of doing it this way also is you can turn the engine over by hand. If you have the ignition on you can see when the spark plug fires, you can check the rotor button is pointing at no1 and you can check for TDC.
Because the spark plug is already out you can also check for compression stroke on No. 1 to ensure you do not have it firing on the exhaust stroke.
If you do have it right you will hear and feel the compression build up on No.1, then the spark plug will fire. (Hint need second person to put thumb over spark plug hole)
If all that is correct than you have a fuel, air or not turning over fast enough issue. I remember i had trouble starting my car initially after changing the dizzy simply because i was not turning it over fast enough. When i connected the jumper pack it fired much easier. Once it was running it was easy to fine tune with the timing light.
