    Low Coolant warning light

    G'day to the brains trust

Before I waste time on something that might already be known I thought I might ask the experts.

Late yesterday the Low Coolant Warning light started blinking, the overflow tank is at the correct level, the radiator is full, I tried disconnecting the wires to the switch on the overflow tank and also tried hard wiring them together with no change to the flashing, I also noticed Today that the blinkers and stop lights have stopped working, the hazard flashers still work so does the horn, wipers, interior lights, headlights, cabin fan and instrument lighting, I pulled the fuses, they seem fine.

If they are not all linked that's one hell of a coincidence.

Our Rangie is a 1988 with Isuzu diesel so the main computer is gone.

    Cheers
    Glenn

Is it the blinkers at the rear or ALL blinkers?

I'd almost bet my left one that they are different faults.

Put the wires back the standard way on the overflow bottle and just add some water. Mine flashes too early as well.

The stop lights might just be a loose switch on the brake peddle.

All the blinkers are out front, rear and instruments, the hazards work all round, the stop lights are out, the lights work front and rear.

The overflow is higher than the Max level already.
Can't find any loose wires under the dash, I'll test the pedal switch next.

    Cheers

I'm now thinking Multi Function Unit fault on the back of the Instruments.
As the Coolant switch and light are wired directly to this according to my Rangie bible.
But someone with more Brains will verify or deny this....

    The lights,
As Jazzman said, but I'll bet the right one, separate issues.
There may be an earth that has come off the back of the lights? Maybe.......??

One of the problems I have is that my Haynes manual shows some of my wiring as 1986 and the rest as 1989 it's really Annoying.

I've been going over the wiring with a probe this afternoon, the low water switch in the overflow tank appears to be working fine, the wiring up to the instruments appears fine, now how the hell do I test the multifunction unit?

Using my probe I can inject power along the power line at different points, starting from the trailer plug I can illuminate the stop lights using the probe I them moved up to the switch wires with success, I attempted to remove the switch behind the brake pedal and parts exploded everywhere, maybe I was a bit rough or it was faulty I'll never know now, I'll get a new switch Tomorrow then continue testing the brake wining if needed, I ran out of time to test the blinkers.

    Cheers

The Multi Function Unit is one of those nasty little blighters, full of Transistors and Caps, and Resistors. I don't know of any way of Testing it.
Only thing I could suggest is eliminate every other possible reason for the fault, then blame that!
From memory, some other warning lights also rely on the MFU. Think the fuel light......
Am getting into a dark grey area of my brain at the moment, trying to remember.
I'll check my Workshop manual first thing in the morning, and see whats what.

Failing that, someone more Intelligent than I will be along to help........

    Gday Mutt,
Found this link on this here forum.
    low coolant warning light
It may or may not be the issue, but it's going back to the start of your issue.
I checked my workshop manual and the MFU does indeed share outputs to other lights.
I have also read that the connections for said MFU can become dodgy. Also the "circuit board" on the back of the Instruments can become less than satisfactory too.
Do you have Rave? If you don't you should get it.You can download it. Google will help you there.

I tested the low water sensor that lives in the overflow tank, I removed it from the tank and lowered it into a bucket of water with my test probe attached, it got a pass.

I have to re-install Rave for some reason it won't start, must be a conflict with other software.

    Cheers
    Glenn
