    LT95 oil

hi there, would dextron 3 be allright for an LT95 gearbox and transfer case. my service manual says use 20w/50 engine oil. the person who serviced it reckons dextron 3 auto trans fluid will be allright. what do others use and recommend, gearbox is running behind a rangie 3.5 carby v8.
    thanks from peter

There must be about a 1000 posts on this subject so do a search - my preference is for engine oil but others have used other oils - never use EP90 as it will kill the gearbox and tfr.

If I recall there was little enthusiasm for ATF - makes changes good but not the greatest lubricating properties.

Garryc is right - there's heaps of threads on this.

I'm told that there was a preference for ATF over engine oil in the LT95 for a while because it was less likely to "foam".

However engine oil seems to be a popular choice for simplicity, and it is generally conceded that some of the light gearbox synthetics (although expensive) are better long term.

    Try "searching" under LT95 oil.

Just use the same oil as you stick in your engine - makes carrying spare oil a snap - one bottle for for engine and box.. Simples

mines the early 5spd... Has anyone tried the nulon G70 treatment in there with engine oil ? The reason I ask it the synchros have always been great, but with the bloody freezing weather we have had lately, the synchros don't want to work until the gearbox has warmed up. I've had great success with G70 in the past, but aren't sure about mixing it with engine oil .....

Your 5 speed (LT85?) is a completely different gearbox and I if recall used gear oil not engine oil.

Any comments relevant to the LT95 do not apply to the LT85.

Yeah LT77 ... crap your right ... I'm pretty sure I was told it used engine oil in them all... I'm going to check it hasn't had engine oil put in there. Manual says DexronIID for tranfer case and 5spd in the '85 model. I'll go away now so I don't confuse a thread about a completely different gearbox.

No doubt there's engine oil in there, that's why the gearshift is so crunchy in the cold weather now.

You did say an early 5 speed which would have been an LT85 - so if you have an LT77 it is not all that early.

If it is an LT77 then definitely do not put engine oil in - Syntrans would be the pick.

ATF was originally specced for the LT77 but a decent 70/75W-80/85 MTF as Gary suggested would be nice, you may just sacrifice dead cold shiftability a little, depending on the brew used.

I run engine oil in my LT95 (Penrite HPR30) without any problems. I also put some Nulon G70 additive in both the gearbox and diffs as well. The G70 really helps to smooth out the changes a bit and quieten down the whining. I recommend putting G70 into just about any manual gearbox or diff, always had good experiences with it.

    Just my two cents anyways.

    Cheers,
    Steve
