    Fuel system icing ?

    Hi Guys,

I decided it would be a fun morning to drive to work through the bush this morning. Even though it was 0degrees C the old Rangie was happy to hurtle it's way through the bush.... As soon as I pull out of the bush to drive into the work carpark (it's about a 10 minutes drive).... The thing leaned right out as I pulled out into the traffic....... I frantically whipped the choke full out and managed to drive the two blocked to work by "massaging" the choke.

It cut out as I rolled into the carpark... And the fuel pump is noisy as hell... Rattling like crazy. Can the fuel pump ice up on these? Or am I now standed here (I'll go out at lunch time and see if the fuel pump is flowing fuel eitherway).

    seeya,
    Shane L.

Well that's bizarre, I just went out and tried, it rattled for about 5seconds then started circulating fuel again....

So either it can ice up at the pumps inlet.............. Or I need to crawl under it tonight and see if there is any cracks or leaks in the suction side of the fuel pumps fuel line... You sure don't want the pump loosing prime while driving along (I'm assuming it wouldn't rattle if it was pressure side, it would just keep pumping until the a relief valve dropped out).

No need to invoke fancy theories on ice formation (you don't get ice without moisture and if there's enough moisture to ice your pump your fuel system is seriously ugly inside), relief valves or otherwise. It'll either be the pickup in the tank is blocking up, or the fuel tank venting system isn't allowing enough air into the tank as you use fuel. Just stop and loosen the tank's filler cap next time it does it.

That's the first thing I tried... (releasing the fuel flap that is). I figured icing may have caused an issue ....somewhere because it's never happened before ............ Then again I've never driven it before when it's close to zero degrees

I'm thinking blocked tank pickup or air leak suction side of the pump somewhere. If only some moron didn't drive it through clay, mud and **** all the time .... And make it bloody horrible to look under

How old is the fuel filter? On my Carby 84 it gets these symptoms when the fuel filter is blocked except it is not temperature related.

It's gotta be a lot colder than zero before you'll start icing up while driving. I'd look at filters and pickups.
