Sorry to tag in on your thread but was just about to ask similar question. My 77 is being rebuilt along original lines however "improved" without trying to lose too much of original car. So, stick with LT95 or put LT77/230 transfer case in? Opinions please. Car will remain in family for some time(I am told&#128522 thanks

i would try leave the lt95 in it as a lot stronger box. I had a r380 in behind a 4.6 and it didn't last to long. even they are a lot smother gearbox.

Low range in all the LT95 and LT230 are basically the same and the 1:1 LT95 is basically the same as 5th in either the Rangie or Disco LT230 behind the LT77 or R380. (LT85 are a 110 box so will likely come with a 1.141:1 hi ratio although you can mix and match LT230 ratios).

The 4.11 diffs should make the vehicle cope with the 35" tyres, so your question should be do I require reliability or 5 speeds. If you require 5 speeds I would be looking for a late suffix R380 with the earlier 1:222 ratio transfer only because it has bigger more reliable teeth.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

That would be my choice combined with an overdrive if you can source one.

The overdrive might be the hard bit but at least it can be added at anytime in future

well I think my next thing to do would be look at the lt85 and see what it is like on the inside, and if all good I might go for that as can have a lot more ratio selection with the transfer case.
