    Conversion of Auto to Manual choke

    Hi All,

    Has anyone (ssuccessfully) converted an Auto choke to a manual choke on CD175 Carbies.

    I've a 1981 RRC with 3.5 V8 with original CD175 carbies.

    The previous owner has tried to convert auto choke to manual and we've pinpointd my rich mixture and rough idleing to the coversion.

    Any pic's and advice appreciated,

    I had a pair of both auto and manual choke CD175s. When I was ready to have them restored I was told that the auto choke ones could not be changed to manual. I had the manual ones done up and they are on the car now working well. Still have the auto ones in a box.
    2022 Defender D250 S being set up for touring.
    '83 RRC 2 door 300tdi on club plates
    '82 RRC 2 door almost finished on club plates (will always be nearly finished!)
    2013 Freelander (wife's)
    1994 Defender ute hopefully on club plates one day

    Conversion of Auto to Manual choke

    Hi discojools,


    OK ... so you had the older manual choke CD175 refurbished.

    They are the ones that have a brass mixture screw underneath bottom of the bowl?

    Later CD175 carbies like mine the mixture is adjusted via a special tool inserted into with dashpots.
    The auto choke (from my understanding) used water from the radiator via hoses to activate the choke moving a piston and spring via heat sensitive metals.
    I've never seen one in operation so that's why I posted if anyone has one still running to send a pic.


    From response looks like no one does? maybe they don't use a choke now.

    Mines been converted by the previous owner, to manual choke using crude (but in hindsight real ingenuity) incorporating some of the auto choke mechanism but its shortcomings is that it doesn't always turn off.


    This has lead to it's always smelling of fuel (rich mixture) ever since I've owned her, but recently it has a noticeable flat spot and when the engine gets hot (if turned off or stalls) she won't start ?it's been a real bugger stuck on the side of the road or at service station (until she cools down enough to start) and together with noticeable sooty smoke from the exhaust plugs don't take long to foul up.

    I don't believe that the old manual choke mechanism is a direct bolt on to the late carbies like mine.

    Appreciate your input ....have to decide where to go from here.

    I am pretty sure that some of the later carbs had the fixed main jet but manual choke.

    My 77 had a 81-85 high compression motor, but had a manual choke .

    I cannot be sure whether the carbs were from a 77 or 81-85.

    My 81 in Saudi had adjustable main jets so the "old style" carbs were still available in the Middle East until after 1981.

    Maybe you could source old style carbs from UK, although there should be some still floating around in OZ.
