    Steering Column Wiring

Had to pull the shroud around the steering column off to fix some wiring issues and a faulty ignition barrel switch. There are these two black wires shown in the photos that I cannot see what they are supposed to be attached to. They are floating in space and everything seems to work fine. No obvious plugs or connectors that I could see to attach them to. They seem to connect to the washer and indicator levers on either side of the column. Anyone have any ideas by looking at the attached photos as to what they might be for and where they are supposed to be connected?

Hi those 2 black cables are actually optic fibres for the illumination of your indicator and wiper stalks.
Basically the globe for the illumination is under the column and these 2 plug in to that and the light travels up them to illuminate your stalks.
I can't remember exactly where they go but possibly near that white thing under your column.
I think the plugs push in from the rear into the globe and face forward.
You may also have the globe blown?..sorry it's been a while since I did mine

As mentioned above. They slide into a white or light grey fitting that holds a T5 globe that switches on with parkers. It's centrally located under steering column. I've used a little dab of silicone on the black sheath just to keep them located in the fitting.

Thanks guys. You were both spot on. Plugged them back in and now I have illumination on my levers

I must say I do not recall having illuminated stalks, so before I remove the shroud again, is this for the hard dash or soft dash vehicles? I'm just wondering if my 91 has this feature.

standard on my '92 ... which is probably a '91 build I can't say I've ever noticed if they actually work in the dark. But I remember removing and refitting the optical cables when it was apart.

Well I had the opportunity last night to check out the status of the illumination in the stalks, as it was raining quite heavily on the way home from dinner.

To say they illuminated is a bit of an exaggeration... There is light in each stalk, but it's weak as the proverbial and it also does not appear to 'correctly' illuminate the wiper stalk. The indicator stalk is only marginally better.

So I'm just wondering if anyone has removed the stalk fibre, if it needs cleaning or some kind of adjustment to correctly apply the light into the stalks prism etc.

Better still, if there is a high intensity LED replacement for the source in the column - that may be used?

Sounds perfect to me ... Why would you want them bright? They are controls you use by touch. Over illumination would give you the ****s if it's dark outside
