Yes, indeed I did meet Max today and took him for a drive. All of GG's points are correct, the biggest one being is - the wiring is DIABOLICAL! It has had a lot of aftermarket wiring work, all of which needs to go to god IMO. Once all the extra wiring is out of the way checking the original wiring will b e much easier.
Now the good points. The engine runs well and is smooth and quiet. Gearbox - LT95 - seems fine and changes gears well. Clutch is barely hanging in there - it only takes up right at the end although it didn't slip at all.
Pitman arm and ball joints are worn giving it the wanders a bit, but apart from that it drives very well and seems quite tight.
The majority of the work will be cosmetic and GG will be able to do a great job with that, so this Rangie will be looking great again in no time. :)

Max's Update
Hi All,
I did a bit of work on Max today... The theory being that this is not a complete chassis up restoration - more of a rolling restoration.
First step - was to sand back any surface rust on the inside of the car.
Before - spare wheel holder, petrol tank neck (inside of car) & drivers floor:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/139.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/140.jpg
A few hours of sanding back - spare wheel holder, petrol tank neck & drivers floor:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/142.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/143.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/144.jpg
Next step - rust converter applied - spare wheel holder, petrol tank neck, drivers floor:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/145.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/146.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/147.jpg
Then primer - spare wheel holder, petrol tank neck & drivers floor:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/148.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/149.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/150.jpg
Next - I am going to cover the entire floor in a sound proof mat (Resomat), but I decided to paint the passenger floor, drivers floor & spare wheel with a sound proofing paint BEFORE I install the mat:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/151.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/152.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/153.jpg
Oh boy - the sound deadening paint is quite thick - who knows what effect it will have. My thoughts are:
* It can only help decrease sound... :wasntme:
* It says that it helps with rust protection...
* It's all being covered by sound deadening material anyway - so it does not have to be a perfect paint job.
I also painted the petrol neck with a white paint (over the primer). Again - this area will be covered by sound deadening material:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/154.jpg
While all of that is drying.... Here is one of the sill petrol tank lids (before):

After:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/156.jpg
I forgot to take a photo of the passenger door handle (before) - but here it is after being sanded/cleaned:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/157.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/01/158.jpg
Next jobs on the list:
* Start installing the sound deadening material
* Paint passenger side door handle
* Sand/Clean/Paint drivers side handle
Cheers,
GG.

Hi All,
Today I decided to remove the 2 x head light surrounds and the front grill. I will sand all of these and then paint them in gloss black.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/02/252.jpg
Before:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/02/253.jpg
After sanding:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/02/254.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/im...016/02/255.jpg
I discovered that the rear of the headlight surround was painted (black) but the paint was a lot thinner than the front of the surround, and came off much easier. I will be painting both side gloss back. :)
I finished one headlight surround and then started on the grill.. Oh my - that's proving to be fun..
Does anybody know where I can purchase the rubber seal that goes between the headlight and the surround? Mine fell apart in my hands when I removed the headlights..

Today's Work
So,
Last weekend I sanded back 1 x head light surround.
This week I continued and sounded back the other head light surround, the grill, the door handles, and the bonnet stay...
Hours of fun there...
A couple of before:

Looking Good! Amazing what a tarted up grille and headlight surrounds can do.
Only problem is that it will force you to cut & polish the rest of the body to get some gloss back....
Keep up the good work!

Hi All,
Well - it's been far too long between drinks on this.. I was looking back through some old emails, and noticed that I purchased this project about 4 years ago now.. [bigsad]
Thanks to Gromit - I picked up 5 x rims for a very good price. Although they are quite rusted:

Sand blasted and primed ($30 per wheel - much cheaper than I could do it for with a wire wheel):

When the funds allow - I'm going to order the carpet kit.
Paint the rims - and then put new tyres on them.
Then clean-up everything, full service, gaskets, etc
Tidy up the engine bay
Install everything
And look at a "closed door" paint job.
So - not much money left to spend AND not much work to do either.. [bigrolf][tonguewink]

Wheels
Will you still have to fit tubes or have you had them modded to be tubeless? I have 5 spare Rostyles but to make them tubeless, sandblasted and painted is going cost a small fortune.
-
I will be fitting tubes. I am going to paint them, not powder coat them.
I have ordered some carpet and am also investigating recovering of the seats...
I need to win Tatts!
-
I had more punctures with tubed rostyles than any other vehicle/ wheel ever. A tube in tubeless tyre isn’t best. Plus the rostyles being steel - rusted particularly where we live. All which contribute to potential issues
