Here is the first coat of silver - I had been experimenting with different silvers (I think that I tried 5 in total). I'm very happy with the one that I went with:

So when the weather permits - I will be painting the front bumper, rear bumper, end caps, and 5 x wheels all in the silver.

Oh and I have purchased a Gazebo/Tent combination to make as a temporary spray booth - but more of that later when it arrives..

    An Update

    Hi All,

Managed a bit of work on the car this weekend..

Firstly (thanks to 16PMark) - these arrived during the week:

Next - I removed the brackets for the struts both from the body (home made) and on the tailgate also. I will clean these up and paint them:

Finally managed to get both rear windows out. The trick was to use WD40 for lubricant, and basically compress the top window seal and slowly ease the top of the window out - with enough force to get it out but not enough to damage anything.. Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle:

Removed this trim piece - I think that it holds the carpet to cover the tools.. I'm not sure as I didn't have any carpet there..

Removed the tailgate handle, end locks, lower rubber and the strip that hides the rods:

Spent hours - literally hours - sanding the tail gate:

Question for the day - I think that the upper trim piece for the rear windows is held to the body via pop-rivets... I can feel what I think are the back end of the pop-rivets on the top, but I can't see the heads inside the trim/rubber. Does anybody have any tips on how to remove the upper trim bit?

I have removed the lower part of the seal and the chrome trim piece, but the top piece currently has me stumped..

Oh - and I have no idea how I'm going to get those windows back in.. I rekon that it's going to be a difficult job..

    Cheers,
    GG.

GG, I’m not familiar with the RRC rear window but maybe similar to D1. I have to replace the seal on the D1 and found this YT video. Hopefully it’s useful.

    Hi rar110,

Thanks for the youtube clip - unfortunately the RRC is nothing like the D1 in this particular area.

However - the good news is that I need to do this job (replacing the window rubber) on my D1 also - so now I know how to do it!!!

    Cheers,

The upper tailgate has scrubbed up awesome. Looks to be minimal rust. Nice!

    Bit of an update

    Hi All,

Unfortunately not much progress this week - I had to work Sunday night, Monday, Tuesday, and tonight as well.. But I did sneak in some work last night..

Finally worked out how to get the rear windows out - the upper channel is held in by pop-rivets that I had to drill out, but i had to remove the rubber seal first.. Both rear windows are now out:

Then (as the weather was warm) - I painted a second coat on the rear bumper and a first coat on the front bumper:

I have also been speaking to a spray painter... Oh and ordering more parts

    Cheers,
    GG

    Bit of an update

    Hi All,

I didn't get to work on the car on Saturday, but I did spend some time on Sunday...

First thing was to remove both the sill tanks - the front seats couldn't be removed until these sill tanks have been removed. I don't plan to re-use these tanks, I am going to remove the associated wiring and fuel lines, and sell them off.

    Passenger seat out:

    Drivers seat out:

    Seat bases and drivers seat:

This is the view inside the console - an example of the wiring that lays ahead...

And lastly - I set up a temporary spray booth. I used an old tent, some tables, and some LED strip lighting.

An example of two of the wheels - this is only the first coat of many. It's the same silver as the bumpers:

I also managed to do another coat of the underside of the bumpers on Friday night, no picture though because it doesn't look any different!

Onwards and upwards - I am hoping to do some work on the car tomorrow..

    Cheers,
    GG.

The floor looks to be in good condition. I assume it steel. Has someone got in with some paint to give the floor some extra protection?

Yes - I am fairly sure that I sanded back surface rust in sections and then primed it.

I am most likely going to put sound deadening on the floor also.

How are we supposed to take it for a drive now the seats are gone? 😁

You’re probably not going to want to watch what I do with that wiring tomorrow... 😉
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
