A couple of years ago I had someone turn up at my place with a Citroen DS wanting me to look at the spheres. Of course it wouldn't start after he pulled up............... "It does this sort of stuff all the time .... stuff intermittently working .... I think maybe it needs a new ignition switch".... So I popped the bonnet ............... And my brain just did one of those "**** me ..... don't say anything ..... just let him leave and don't say a word".... freak outs.
He explained that no-one in town could fix it as Citroens were so complicated. It probably should go to a specialist down in Melbourne.... I kept saying to myself "don't say anything .... just hope it gets out of here ...... don't say anything ..... FFS .... moron, don't say anything"............ So obviously I pointed at the horrific rats nest of poorly wrapped aftermarket wiring beside the battery and said "Has anyone checked that" ...... "No, why?" ............. I groaned ......... WHY DID I SAY ANYTHING. I unwound all the layers of insulation tape ........... and everything just fell apart in my hands as the insulation tape was removed. FFS: The bloody main power feed from the battery had been even hacked through. It was just a twisted together mess.
See what I mean ..... Your suppposed to just say nothing .... Do nothing .... pretend your blind. I ended up spending a couple of hours and chopped everything out .... fabricated a new wiring loom to go over to the altnerator and starter, fixed up the main power feed back into the dash. He was absolutely amazed ..... EVERYTHING WORKEDI must be a god damn magician right ? Bloody horrible complicated cars that bloody citroen things are to fix
My first job on any car that I own is to snip out every wire that doesn't work and fix whatever is wrong with the circuits.

Hi All,
Not a huge amount done in the last week - been trying to source window parts (difficult and not yet solved). But did manage to remove the drivers side window channel - have a look at how rusted out it is in sections:
Next job - was to give the car a thorough pressure washer clean - inside and out..
Masked up the dash as best that I could - I didn't spray water directly on the dash anyway, but you can't be too careful:
Then up onto the hoist - and used 2 cans of degreaser on the oily bits:
This pic was taken after the SECOND round of underneath...
Basically I:
* Drove the car outside and washed the inside
* Waited 24 hours
* Drove the car inside
* 2 cans on degreaser
* Washed underneath
* Waited 24 hours
* 2 cans of degreaser
* Another pressure wash.
The last picture was after the second round!
I have a few small jobs to do before I send the car off to the painter / seats off for restoration.
Cheers,
GG.

After cleaning the 2 Door - I wanted to make sure that it started and ran okay (that nothing electrical had got wet..)
I started the car and it ran fine, but when I pushed down on the accelerator cable - it went straight to the floor and the car stalled...
Looking around after removing the air filter - I found this:
For a split second I did think about doing a macgyver on it - but then I remembered that I had a brand new, spare cable in my parts stash..
I don't remember buying it - but I recently did a bit of an audit on all of the parts that I need, and I found it..
Next step was to install it - the under-dash side was an absolute pain to install - basically it's done by feel...
The car started fine - but when you pressed on the accelerator it would cough and stall.
I went to bed and slept on it.
Last night - I adjusted the accelerator cable (nothing that I had ever done before), got the revs to sit on about 650 - and she runs great, and now doesn't cough or stall..
Although this is a minor mechanical task that most people have probably done a thousand times - for me it was a first, and I was quite chuffed..
While out there last night I also started to tinker with the engine bay - which can really do with a good detail..
Cheers,
GG.

Hi All,
I spent some time on the 2 Door over the weekend...
Firstly - this arrived during the week.. It's an original coin pocket designed to go where a radio does. At this point I won't be installing a radio in the 2 door - rather I will be listening to the 3.5 V8 as it purrs along..
Next job - tidy up the 2 brackets from the upper tail gate. Before and After:
Next - the tailgate handle. Before and After:
Next remove the air-horn - to be thrown out:
Next - tidy up the tailgate lock:
Next - remove the bonnet scuttle bracket:
Pull it apart:
And cleaned:
The tailgate finishing cover - before and after:
The bracket that holds the carpet to cover the tools - before and after:
Next - I removed the handbrake cover:
The metal strip that goes over it - broke into pieces:
So I will have to make one up - here is the start of it:
I'm also going to replace the hi-lo boot:
Cleaned-up the front number plate holder:
These are the home made brackets for the upper tailgate. It's a modification to strengthen the tailgates struts - I will be modifying the bracket to tidy it up:
I clear coated the 5 x wheels and 2 x bumpers as well, but didn't take a picture as you can't really tell...
And that was about it for the weekend.
Oh - and I ordered some more parts!
Cheers,
GG.

Hi GG,
I've had a good look, but don't have the bits you need.
The 'home made upper tailgate brackets' could well be for the mod that makes the struts keep the tailgate shut by triangulation.
cheers, DL
Hi All,
This weekend marked a turning point on this restoration..
Firstly - in the below pictures you will see some new brackets (top of the picture) and the old brackets (bottom of the picture). These brackets mount to the body - and you attach the lower tailgate struts to them. The original (home made) brackets looked very flimsy, with very little meat left in sections of the metal.. Luckily I know a very hand guy who fabricated the new brackets for me. A BIG THANK YOU to Mick88.
The new brackets are intentionally larger to give more strength to them.
And a very quick test fit:
Next came the turning point - my baby is being sent off to paint:
I followed the tow truck to the panel beater, and spent about an hour going over the rust spots that I had found - and the "alterations" that the previous owner has made to the vehicle... I had a good chat, inspected some of their work, and left feeling confident.. The ETA for the car returning back to me is "end of feb". Which works fine with me - as I have a lot of other parts that I still need to restore.
First job - clean up the drivers side window - Before and After:
Next job - clean up and restore one of the rear sliding windows. Before, during and After... The old window tint was glued on with titanium.. I think that I used 5 razor blades when removing it from this window! I only managed to slip once with the razor and sliced some skin off my bracing hand. I'm not sure what the glue holding the tint was - but it stunk as I removed it.
Next job - the other sliding window - Before and After:
As yesterday was a good day for painting (27c) - I decided to etch prime some of the components that I had already cleaned:
A few hours later - the first top coat:
I still have many small components to restore, plus send the seats away for restoration. But the momentum is still strong - although the bank balance is low.
Cheers,
GG.

Hi All,
On Saturday the carpet kit arrived and I'm very happy with it:
Yesterday I spent the day cleaning up the drivers door handles, grill and head light surrounds.
Here I have etch primed the tailgate handle, tailgate locks and the drivers door handles:
Here is the first coat on the head light surrounds:
And the grill:
I also clear coated a few other bits - but didn't bother taking any pictures of those..
I still have many, many individual parts to sand back and paint, while the car is away getting it's re-spray.
I also sent the front & rear seats away to be fully restored - a very expensive (but well worth it) exercise...
Merry Christmas to all and hopefully I get stuck into more parts over the coming weeks.
Cheers,
GG.

Hi All,
I did some work on the 2 door over the last few weeks - not many pictures as the work was quite detailed, not much to show for hours and hours of cleaning/sanding/priming/painting..
I started work on the second set of door handles - here are some before pictures:
Interestingly - the door handles have 2 pieces that are made of metal, and 2 pieces that are made from plastic. The plastic pieces had to be sanded by hand. Here they are primed:
Next - I wasn't happy with the paint on the exterior handles, so I sanded them back and started again:
I'm not sure what happened, but the tailgate handle got damaged during painting... This piece seems to be cursed - I'm not onto my 4th go and getting a finish that I am happy with..
Next up - I have 2 sets of the plastic sills, and I have the piece of plastic that attaches to the rear bumper... Here is everything before I started cleaning them:
First phase - use a pressure washer to try and blast off as much dirt, and road grime:
Next - use 800 grit sand paper and sand everything by hand...
Then prime:
And 3 coats of a plastic paint:
Next I started working on the rear window guides - these are chrome and in poor shape...
I decided that I would experiment with the underside of these, in case I damaged/scratched the chrome. I used 240/600/800 grit sand paper, and the lubricant was spray on de-greaser...
Here is a side by side comparison - the left hand one has been done, the right hand one hasn't:
I was very happy with the above results - I haven't polished these yet, I have only cleaned them up..
I also cleaned up the plastic guides while I was at it:
At the moment I am clear coating the inner door handles, outer door handles, tailgate handle, bonnet stay, etc.. More pics next weekend hopefully.
There was a surprising amount of work that went into these pieces..
Cheers,
GG.
