    Seats - RRC

    Hi All,

Some of you might have seen my other thread "meet max" - I am about to start the restoration on a 1976 2 Door Classic Range Rover.

The front and rear seats are a mess - which is understandable considering how old the vehicle is.

So I need to make a decision:

    1) Get the existing seats re-upholstered - expensive
    2) Buy all new seats - expensive
    3) Use seat covers - cheap but not the look that I want
    4) Buy good seats from a wreck and use those

I am currently leaning towards option 4 - BUT do the seats from a newer Range Rover fit my 2 Door 76?

I know that in my 2 door, the front seats have the seat belts inbuilt as part of the seat. I am guessing that the later 4 door RRC's - probably have the seat belts on the B pillar. And so a front seat from a 4 door, probably won't work in a 2 door...

So is there a golden rule that I can follow?
Eg - 4 door sets will never fit a 2 door?
Or 4 door seats will fit up until a particular model year?

Any help / advice is greatly appreciated. I don't want to waste money buying seats from a wreck, only to discover that they won't fit my vehicle...

    Cheers,
    Grey Ghost.

As far as I know, everything from the 4 doors onwards had the pillar mount belts and as such aren't suitable for the 2 doors. I could be wrong and am willing to be corrected by those with more knowledge.

I've heard about people welding in strengthening plates to the B pillar and pillar mounting the belts which would open up a whole world of seats to use, but if you're anything like me it's not the preferred option.

I've been on the lookout for some seats with integral belts to swap mine over as the seats in my '75 2 door and getting extremely tired and are pretty much held together with seat covers. All I've really found so far are either truck seats or BMW convertible seats.

The truck ones often don't tilt forward for rear access and the BMW ones are worth more than the car so I'm still looking.

    Hope this helps
    Cheers,

I've seen the seats in an early 4 door and they still had seat mounted belts. The big problem with later seats is you lose the tilt forward function that allows access to the back. Makes life difficult.

For roadworthy just get cheapo covers............might cost $120 F&R.

For the longer term I'd get them re-upholstered. Take the seats out, take the covers off, save the clips, save the original covers so you can see where to put the clips back in the same places.

Much cheaper doing it like this because an auto upholsterer will have to take the covers off and apart to copy the parts anyway.

I have an industrial sewing machine and have re-done mine in matching vinyl once. The next time will be in matching colour leather from a 3k lounge suite found on the hard rubbish collection.

    cheers, DL

83 and 84 RRC 4 doors had the belts integrated into the seats still and from memory the 4 door seats can be made to tilt forwards fairly simply.

And you can always mix and match a good seat back to a good base
