    3.9 Distributor Teardown queries

I had been investigating high fuel consumption on my 3.9 V8 RRC.

It seems that the vaccuum advance on the distributor is not working (no movement of the baseplate, while sucking on the vac line), so I attempted to take the dizzy apart to investigate further.

I have removed 2 out of 3 screws which hold the flash shield onto the dizzy. 3rd screw seems to have a more rounded head than the other 2.

Are they just a standard phillips head, or something special like a pozidriv?

The other 2 were removed with a phillips head screwdriver

The screws should all be standard Philips heads although they can be full of paint or whatever Land Rover uses as an anti tamper indication. However you don't need to take the cover off to change the vac advance capsule, all you need to do is make sure the arm of the vac unit is engaged in the pin sticking out under the pickup plate.

If you do decide to dig around inside the distributor, this thread may help you do the job.

Thanks for the advice bee utey.

I've removed the offending screw, flash cover off, then vac advance module off. Turns out it is dead. I've fitted a new lucas unit, and will hopefully get to refit the dizzy to the vehicle this weekend and roadtest.
