Body swap 86 onto 93 chassis

A mate of mine recently rolled his 93 RRC (no one hurt) and is chasing another classic Rangie to put his bits in. I have an 86 and rather than swapping individual bits, eg. engine, suspension, etc. over, would it be easier to just do a body swap (given his chassis is still straight). The main advantage I can think of is that he retains his chassis/rego number.

So what major issues are involved ??

The '86 body will have to conform to the '93 ADRs
Also, as the compliance plate cannot be removed (supposedly), Queensland Transport may require a modification plate.

I'd be chatting to a VASS engineer and/or Queensland Transport.

I'd just find another body and move the build plates over .... 20 seconds work. all my cars (regardless of brand) seem ot have the plates held on with a couple of pop rivets!

It's probably going to be cheaper and easier to buy another car and keep that one as a parts car though. Man these things have the structural integrity of a wet paper bag. Look at the roof and that thing

How do you get around the VIN/chassis number stamped in the body? Is it stamped on the body somewhere? Firewall perhaps?

VIN on the RRC is stamped on the chassis behind front drivers wheel, very hard to see sometimes

Early RRC's don't have any stamped VIN on the body, just the plate.

Later ones did. Not sure of the year.

Oh I'm bad ... If that is the case, I'd buy a silver one of similar vintage and move the tags across (so long as you haven't claimed that one on insurance). This avoids having to get RWC's etc......

Now to put on my flame proof suite before I hit reply ..... because this is "illegal"

Body older than chassis ain't legal in Vic.

In my case a 1981 red body onto a 74 chassis that previously had a white body is 'classed' as a colour change and could be done over the phone.

Pop rivets and an aluminium plate were involved in this colour change.

The only differences between the actual bodies were that the 81 had repeater lamps on the front guards (deleted) and that the 74 only had one side mirror, D/S, which it now has.

    Just a colour change.

It is a Qld question, but that aside, I am aware of heaps of older bodies on a new chassis registered in Victoria

It goes by the chassis number or VIN.
If the ADRs that applied to that chassis required air bags, you would have to fit air bags.
I think it would be the emission controls that would catch you out. Was there a difference between the '86 and '93 motors?
