    Question 91 RRC starting issue

    Hi all,

Posting on behalf of a friend.
Car is a 1991 Vogue. 3.9 EFI with the 14CUX ignition.

It has had a dodgey ignition barrel after losing all of it's springs. He has been able to start and run the car fine though, he just has to be careful with it as there is no spring to keep it out of the starting position.

So here's the problem. He took the car for a run to the fuel station after installing a 'new' alternator at my place, as the old one had packed up. Car started and off he went. Coming out of a corner, with a little bit of right foot, and the car switched itself off. Note that the battery was almost dead at the time.

It has fuel, it was turning over fine with jumper leads on, but wouldn't fire.

We are assuming that there is a relay or a fuse that is stopping it from starting. The only other thing out of the ordinary was that the fuel filler flap has all of a sudden decided to stop working.

Everything else electrical seems to work fine.

I ended up dragging him back to my place and now I have a dead range rover in my driveway.

    What should we be checking?

    Cheers,
    Jeremy

Not enough charge in the battery for the motor to run. The battery may not be charging if it's dead. I'm not sure why it doesn't fire up on a jump start.

The 14CUX has nothing to do with the ignition. The electronic ignition has 12V from the ignition switch and there may be a fuse for it in the block in front of the gear selector. Check first that you have 12V at the coil with the ignition on. If you do then check that you have sparks. Lay the coil lead on the radiator surround and crank the engine. If you have spark there but not at a spark plug you may have a burnt through the rotor button. The 14CUX gets its rotation signal from the coil negative terminal, not the other way round.

If you have spark check all the EFI relays and fuses under the drivers seat. There should be a fuse and relay for the injector circuit and one for the fuel pump.

Ok there is no 12v at the coil

Edit - was the easiest fix. The ignition fuse was blown. Seems that his dodgey ignition caused the problem. He said he had already checked all the fuses, but must've missed the main one to look for!
