    Rangie has randomly died,

    Good evening all,

Firstly before I get into my Rangies "issues", I just want to express my ongoing awe for our new D4.. When we towed our 1600kg van with the Triton, you knew it was there and acceleration from a standing start was a bit slower, but you felt confident that you could cruise comfortably and overtake easily enough. Well the benchmark has been risen.. the D4 just towed Rangie on a car trailer(about 3.5t, maybe more) without thinking about it, and at 15l/100 at 90kmh.. Amazing!

Meanwhile, last week a random guy comes into work, asks about my car and says to me, "I have a 92 Vogue se at home and it's yours if you want it". So I grab his details and organise a time to check it out.

I pretty blown away at this stage. I live in a town over 300km from anywhere, surrounded by Toyota's and the only dealership is a Toyota one, yet I have found a 88 diesel RRC and now this. There are more floating around as well, I have seen them.

So on Monday I go over to check it out, expecting a rotting corpse, but discover a very very straight and tidy RRC. Leather interior, sunroof, winch bar and all the other good fruit. He told me it was running a 4.6lt(?) On straight gas. The reason it was there and why he gave up on it was that it wasn't producing spark and he didn't have the time to work on it anymore, so he thought after 5years sitting there, I who had an interest could make better use of it.

Well after talking about the car and Land Rover idiosyncrasies in general, I went to leave and guess what.. my Rangie would not start! Just winds over like it's missing something. Did a few quick checks, amplifier wiring, spark-yes, full tank of fuel, tried to get the fuel pump to kick in by pushing the flap all the way in and nothing. I think it may have done a fuel pump.

So after a 4hr battle to get it into a car trailer(tyres rubbed the sides the whole way up) I have it at home so I can work out what is going on.

I will be reading the service manual for steps to take, but if anyone has any experience with a similar problem, help would be appreciated.

Regarding the 92? I might take it. Just need a home for it and to work out what I will do with it.

    Thanks guys..

Yeah, if you have spark and can't hear the pump running at all, that would be my guess too. Assuming you have a flapper style EFI? I'm not overly familiar with that setup, but on the later ones there's a schrader valve on the rule rail on the engine where you can check fuel pressure. Might pay to check you're getting power down to the pump before ripping it out as well in case it's a fuse or relay, but if it's the original pump, it's been on borrowed time for a few years now.

With a full tank of juice, it's a bit of a pain to do, unless you want to cut a hole in the floor in the rear above the pump outlet.

Replacement Bosch pump is quite cheap. When I did mine recently I went from having a car that was hard to start to one that fired instantly.

I got a new Britpart fuel pump on ebay for $98 plus shipping... luckily for me someone had already cut out a hole in the floor so it was a breeze to do.
The seller still has one left, assuming you have the steel tank and not the plastic one, and also assuming your sender unit is a seperate item.

    Cheers

Check fuel pump relay and fuses...and as mentioned earlier the schreader valve on the fuel rail if fitted...I had the same issue on my 4.6 p38 ,cut a nice tidy access flap into the floor ,changed fuel pump ...problem solved...access flap has been resealed with proper automotive panel jointing urethane ( after checking for any fuel leaks ) followed by aluminum backed butyl tape. Job done !

    Thanks for the feedback guys!

I don't think it is the pump after a couple of tests. It could be, but it may be something a little more straight forward.

The other night(in the minimal time I have to do stuff) I had a read of some electrical manuals for the car. As confusing as they are, I managed to work out the circuit for the fuel pump.

First thing I noticed was that the fuse was still super. When my sister did a fuel pump in her Disco, the fuse was dead. The other thing I did was jump the pins(30 and 87) on the relay. In the dead of night i could hear a slight noise in the tank, but not as good as the hiss that you normally hear when it's running.

So I decided that it must be one of two things. A blocked filter or the pump was on its way. The cheapest (not really at 16 bucks) was to change the filter. Bam, she started. At this stage it is lucky to not be the pump, cos it is the steel tank type and I'd have to remove it from the car as I have no access to the tank through the floor and I would imagine having the tank full would make it a bit awkward.

She is still a bit rough and idles funny, so I have left the car to settle and I will attempt to drain the bottom of the tank. Hopefully there isn't much in there.

I might even start getting fuel from somewhere else.
