The thing is so crude, harshly sprung and loud it really made me aware of how far ahead LR was with the RRC concept, especially suspension wise.

The harshness of the diesel and having to change gears all the time is something I couldn't do now in a RRC. A 130 maybe, but that's a different kinda deal.

For casual 4wd off road use I would go Chev on gas with an auto.

I have spent that much coin on this car its not worth getting rid of it, so I wanna make it my everyday driver. But it has to be reliable and reasonably economical but also go quite good on excelleration.

I was going to go down the sbc path, but ended up selling it to fund some parts that I needed for my street/drag car build.

So what ever engine I chose it is going to be auto! I cant be bothered with manual anymore. Way to much traffic in the morning bumper to bumper for 45min to work. Pain in the ass!!

Now I have a 4L80e trans that is slipping so it needs a rebuild.

That is going to be sent out to get rebuilt with some better clutch packs and other mods to hold up to the torque of either an LS based motor or Isuzu 4bd1t.

Now I can buy a used VE 6lt engine for about 3.5 to 4k complete with wiring loom or the 4bd1-t for a similar price.

I think I just have to decide what I want. The LS or the 4bd1t

I don't know I need pros and cons from boths side!

I would go the LS.

Range Rovers deserve a burbly lazy V8 that pushes them along at whatever pace you feel like, and sound great doing it. It's their heritage.

You can tune an LS to be quite economical and torquey, so I would go that way.

To get a 4BD1T to go, it won't be economical, diesels need more smoke to get more poke!

Go the V8.... you'll never regret it that way!

My POS is generally my daily driver and for quite awhile I had to go to meetings in Spring St or elsewhere in in the world's most 'liveable' city every week or so. An auto is the only way to go.

The old 350 and C9 surprised quite a few ricers in Flinders St.

Might see how fast it gets to 100 just for fun.

For everyday driving with good acceleration, there is no choice,...has to be the LS, and with the trouble you're going to have to go to with such a conversion, you might as well go LS3, or at the very least the 6L LS2 which is a lovely engine.
I know that the 4L80E is super strong, but does it have an overdrive top,..if not, I reckon you'll need higher ratio diffs?

You want something that can't even get to the speed limit not towing without starting whistles and sirens blowing 'cos the EGT's are getting to the extreme level.... :p :p An LS1/350 chev would do that all day everday much more easily without tripping any alarms etc...

My 3.9 running LPG would be a lot quicker and sound way nicer too :D

If you're anything like me, once you have a V8 as a daily, you never go back. Here's a few anyway. I know these aren't SBC or GM LS based engines but I say go with a American V8 anyway!

Goran, never driven an LS rangie so can't comment on them. But what i can comment on is, my last couple of rangies. Holden v8 stroker, 26L / 100k, 6.5 chev diesel, 17L /100k, 4bd1t 11.67L/100k. So economy is better, but power feels about the same with all 3.
Now as you asked, would i do an LS if i was to do it again, No, doesn't suit what i want it for! But i would do an Auto 4BD1T. 😊

So I think im gonna try my luck with the 4bd1t motor mated to an auto trans.

Has anyone bought an ex-army engine from graysonline?

Would they be running motors or are they cactus?

The description don't really tell you much about them.

You don't wanna convert yours to auto?

I have been doing a bit of googling and some people in the states are bolting up worked up th700r and there surviving behind the Isuzu.

They reckon you have to run a heavy flywheel, not sure which type! They modify it and then bolt there torque converter to that! Apparently the flywheel will take up the vibrations that kill auto trans! But I need to do more research!
