I wish I never sold my 4BD1T rangie, that low down torque off road and towing was awesome. Definitely not as quick as modern diesels but faster than my 300tdi. Would get another in a second.

Would it be worth looking at wreckers for modern common rail TD motor and transmission from something like Ford Ranger/BT50 mazada etc? Take whole lot -ecu etc? Or are costs prohibitive? To me fitting old diesel compared with a modern LS seems at different ends of spectrum. The LS will need computers/looms etc same as modern TDI. What about a GolF 2 liter TD1 with adaptor to your gearbox? Works well in Amorak. Given VW's recent issues what are they worth?

I don't mind the truck like manner, you can get use to it. The only thing that would bother me is if the acceleration is slow and not being able to overtake when wanting to.

The standard worn v8 that I have in it with 33" tyre is probably as slow as I want to go!

Can the 4bd1t be worked up to accelerate to speeds at a good rate? I have read that the Cummins 4bt can be worked up quite a bit so Im assuming the 4bdt1 can have the same amount of work done on it.

A brother shoe-horned an LS engine into his 86 RRC. He had to manufacture several parts to suit then within a year he replaced it with a 2008 TDV8 RRS. Whilst the RRC now had heaps of power and could spin all wheels on command, it still struggled towing his caravan up mountains. It was also a liability when away from home because if any of the custom parts broke then he could be stranded.

What about the BMW TD6 in the FFRR.
No shortage of power upgrades, euro guys put them in patrols and clear 400hp.
they also have adapter plates to patrol boxes made ready to go

Is the the m57 found in the x5? Can you wire up the standard ecu in standalone configuration? Or do you have to buy a new ecu and wiring loom?

How could something with an LS1 struggle to tow a caravan uphill You could 'cam an LS1 for stump pulling torque quite easily. I saw a disco 1 for sale a couple of months back with an LS1 ... something crazy like 700Nm of torque @ 1800rpm .... bugger all power though (as it was cam'd for torque)

4BD1T with the right turbo, flowing exhaust, full width intercooler, fuel/injector tweak and the right gear ratios..... how well would that go? 0 to 100 in under 13 seconds?

As for noise and vibrations: worth getting the engine balanced and line the engine bay with something dense?.... depleted uranium soundproofing!?

Someone must have tuned a 4bd1t into something a bit wickid?
