 What have I done!!! ;)
 What have I done!!! ;)
		Hi,
Just saying hello as a newbie to the genre and also to this forum.
And, talk me out of it... I've been gifted a classic range rover '88 four door 3.5 V8. Just about that's all I know about it, other than the cost of a new battery and spark plugs.
Other than the owner turning the engine over (not starting) I don't think it's done anything in five years other than sit under a tin roof in the garden.
Overall, it's in OK condition, but any tips on what I need to worry about first would be most welcome...
By way of introduction, I grew up in the UK and learnt to drive in a Mk III Land Rover around some serious Cotswold hills - and as a young lad the range rover was the preserve of the gentlemen who wore hunters and had a "loader" on the shoot... never thought I'd get one!
Anyway, I'm super excited at the prospect, if a little daunted at what is most certainly not concourse and probably falls into the 'charity case' list of cars to own - planning on changing that though!
Wish me luck!
Cheers
Andy

There is no longer any option re you being talked out of RR Classic ownership because it is obvious from your post that you are already infected....errrr....cursed.....ummmm.....blessed with terminal Classic RR disease. You have no choice now but to sit back and enjoy the ride....literally and metaphorically speaking.
You will have good days and bad days with it but the magic ownership grin which bursts forth when ever you glance its way or hear its V8 burble will cancel out any negative RR thoughts.
I do wish you good luck and a welcome to AULRO. Looking forward to following your new life adventure.
Thanks!
Today's the day when we find out if it'll start. I'm hopeful for sure, as the previous is nice old gent who pretty much forgot about it!
I'll get some pictures etc and post them up too if I remember in all the excitement!
Cheers
Andy

Sorry to get off track, but it's "given", not "gifted". I know, I know, it's not that important but I can't help it. It's just one of those pet peeves I can't shake.
Anyway - it sounds like it's been under cover, which is important, however with old Range Rovers it's not if it has rust, but where and how much. I can't list all the possible places now, (I think I counted twenty or thirty once!), but will do so if you would like. Otherwise, if the mileage isn't too high then the mechanicals should be okay. What goes wrong with these things is fairly predictable and so, as you have no doubt gathered, just ask here and someone will be along to help. Have fun!
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
He owns a RRC now so he may need to be "gifted"

NO sympathy whatsoever... to either of you ! (Davo or the OP)
Bwaaahaahaaahaaahaaaaaaa
Only good thing is.... You've got a more robust (3.5l) engine than the later 3.9l plus a 'REAL' transfer case, albeit a noisy gear-coupled one... not the Borg Warner / handiwork of Satan, - like the car I sold last weekend...
You have taken the first steps in becoming a competent Land Rover Mechanic.
