Thread: Oops I did it again... New Project

Looks a lot better after a good scrub I seen that rangie advertised and thought it would have been a good project for someone if you got it for the right price.

I hope you didn't pay what he was asking for it initially but it's a lot better that the pics it was advertised with. Rangies kind of grow like mushrooms once you own one you get more (I currently have 6 and probably add a couple more, hopeless!!)

Nope - certainly didn’t pay what he was asking for it.. It had been advertised for a while, which probably helped in the negotiations.

I have 2 now - that’s enough (plus there is the 101, Perentie, 60 ‘88, ‘61 109, Stage One V8 Wagon)

Not at all! As with everything that I do - I am a novice, with big ideas and little skill! Lol

I plan to go over it again - that was just the first wash to get the worst of the crap off.

must be acrylic paint on it to come up like that. 2pack is usually pealing clear off in sheets. Its interesting to see it never appears to have had lpg fitted. The owner can't have been too poor ( LOL ). If only someone would re-make the interior plastics a lot of these old rangies would come up really nice with a little time and effort spent on them!

Ha ha - had that conversation with GG already. I think he has a spare LT230 kicking around...

So today (pretty much all day) revolved around - investigating the cooling system... The car was a little hot when I got home, so I wanted to investigate this further..

As with any job I do on cars - if it's coming off, then it get's cleaned (and painted if required). Any faulty/perished parts will be replaced.

I had never taken one of these radiators out before - my, what a pain-in-the-arse this job is...

Today:
* Remove battery, clean-up clamps
* Remove coolant overflow tank
* Remove radiator hoses
* Remove radiator, radiator cowling
* Remove water pump, viscous fan
* Remove alternator
* Remove all associated belts
* Remove grill
* Remove head lights

I have a 1 year old water pump, viscous fan, fan blade & alternator off another 3.9 - which will get cleaned-up and installed in "Big Red"

Next few jobs:

* Tidy up grill
* Install water pump
* Install alternator
* Install new belts
* Replace head-lights
* Replace front side indicators (already have 2 brand new spares..)
* Replace all hoses
* Service: air filter, oil filter, engine oil, coolant, power steering fluid, etc..

Q: When installing the water pump, obviously I will use a gasket - but do I also need to use "gasket glue"? Do you need both or is it a matter of one or the other.

Homestar had a look at the vehicle - and I think he agrees that it's reasonably original, in good condition - it just needs some TLC.

A thin smear of gasket goo each side of a water pump gasket means it won't leak if you use it straight away, or loosen a single bolt around the water pump at a later date.
