    BW Transfer Box

    Hello fellas,
I'm after some advice regarding a chain driven BW transfer box from a mates 1992 RRC Vogue.
The car had lost drive, with a grinding noise coming from the transfer box when trying to move. The car was running fine up until then.
The box is now dismantled and the output shaft spline that engages with the center diff has stripped.
Not only that, the chain needs replacing and the vc seems to be seized.
Replacing these parts, after a quick look at the usual websites, will cost around 3 grand.
    Our questions are:
Are these transfer boxes generally reliable?
Is it worth repairing or should we be looking for a replacement?
Anything else we should be looking for while it's in pieces?
Bearings are ok and seals will be replaced.

    Many thanks,
    George

A lot of people pull them out even before they fail and install a gear drive LT230 transfer case (from a Disco 1) to save them the embarrassment of sudden failure. There should be a few spare BW cases lying under benches around the country, my mate had three he's pulled out of his and his son's RRC's. He gave them away to another mate of mine who doesn't do off road.

I htink I have one here with a good cross drilled input spline..... You can have it. The only "gotcha" is you have to collect ...........................

The viscous is an expensive part and even if you take up Shanes generous offer for the other parts, I'd still advise fitting a new one as this being seized is probably what caused the other failure. The viscous's on these all seem to lock up when they fail and it's doubtful there will be a good second hand one around.

If it were me, I'd do as Bee Utey suggested and fit an LT230 from a Disco 1 - a good secondhand unit should be able to be got for under a grand.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

There are plenty of RRC's around that haven't been off roaded anywhere near enough to ruin a viscous. The 450K old '89 I wrecked a while ago was driving around without a front drive shaft, so I assumed a locked viscous. However testing it in low range showed that to be not the case. No-one put their hand up for it so it went to my aforesaid mate with his three others.

Let's face it, they're not particularly hard to change over and a reasonable second hand one could last for ages.

Fair enough - I havn't ever seen one that isn't stuffed but I wouldn't have played with nearly as many as you have either.

I have two here .... one is locked and trashed the driveline .... the other is broken "open" and completely worn out to the point the chain can jump. I must admit they are much nicer. Very little driveline lash and quiet. Its a shame they all seem to be broken (I'll stick with my LT230 thanks all the same ).

Thanks very much for your replies and advice fellas, and for your very kind offer Shane. Looks like the LT230 is the way to go.
We have an auto disco 1 laying in the paddock here. Is the LT230 a straight swap for the BW?
Do the tail shafts need to be changed as well?
    Cheers,
    George

I love my quiet fully working non stretched chain Borg Warner that I never have to remember to lock the diff transfer box....
I have some spares just in case I need parts in the future..
Just sayin.....I also have 3 LT 230 as spares as well...but they may never be used again...maybe

Yeah pretty much a straight swap. With the whole disco you have everything you need. You will need the front prop shaft as well as the LT230 and center diff lock linkages. You will also need to cut out the center console so the transfer case lever can move sideways (for the diff lock).
