    LT230 oil leaks

    Hi Guys,

The old POS rangie never leaves oil drips under it .... So I just assumed the big oil patch of gearbox oil its been leaking whenever I moved it was the gearbox cooler split from the accident. I've just been getting it ready to pull the motor out.... and while under it noticed the handbrake drum is leaking oil badly out of the back of it .... which is very strange ... How could an accident cause that ?? So I looked around and there is evidence of scratching and marks on the exhaust Y pipes and the tailshaft............ The only thing that could have caused this is the asssholes at the place that did the repair quote must have used a forklift to move it around. They have picked them damn car up by its tail shaft and exhaust ..... AAAArrrrhhhhhh....

Assuming nothing is damaged in the transfer case .... which seals do I need to by ( so I can order them in before and have them on hand before I pull it down).

Well that's a bigger job than you would expect to get that sucker out ...

Its a bloody huge thing when you pull it out still assembled. Oh ... don't forget to remove the gearbox mount (including the big aluminium bracket) and the transfer case gearshift lever .......................... Yeah, guess how I know that).

I guess I'll just pull the brake drum off and see what hides behind it. Hopefully just a seal that is easy to replace (and there is nothing else broken).

Is there anything else I should do to a 3.9 serpentine belt engine while its out ? Its a strong runner that doesn't leave oil drips on the ground (but everything was absolutely filthy dirty and covered in oil). I'll probably pull the injectors and change the "O"rings while its out.

Output shaft seal is pretty easy to do - maybe do them both while you’ve got easy access to it.

Looks like a pretty clean drivetrain. 👍

Front and rear seals are the same part #.
Replace the felt washers as well that seal the spline on the flanges.

excellent. Thanks all, I'll pull it down first and make sure nothing it broken (I did drive it around the yard a couple of times, so I'm assuming the transfer case is ok!).

weirdly this one doesn't leak ..... ( by leak I mean leave puddles on the ground). It was filthy though, pictures show it after pressure washing. It does burn a bit .... I'd guestimate 150ml per thousand kms when towing the block of flats.
