    No start issue

G'day guys, an unusual one for you.

89 Range Rover running fine. Idling for 20 minutes. Then car switches off and smoke from the starter solenoid. Will not start just sparks a bit at the solenoid.
Before I just throw a starter motor in it. Is there anything else I should check? Don't want to just burn out another stater but I can only imagine it didn't throw back and was slightly engaged. Any help is appreciated No start issue

Sounds like a short in the starter or solenoid, but never really heard of this happening. That's probably taken out the battery or at the very least dropped it's voltage enough so the ECU can't run and the engine stopped. I'd be checking the wiring from the batter to the starter carefully, as well as the body and engine earths before trying anything again. Charge the battery out of the vehicle and see if it comes up ok - it could be fine but in that case there could be other wiring damaged as well.

When you've done all of that and replaced the starter, be careful and be ready to disconnect the battery - last thing we want is the car burning to the ground.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY NOW !!!!! I'm betting you have the power cable down the the starter shorting (where it may have rubbed through). Or failing that loose or shorting starter connections.

It is VERY important that you don't try and drive the car or leave the battery cables hooked up. If the starter cabling is shorted, this car is a big toasty bonfire waiting to burn. The starter circuit is big heavy, unfused cable.
