    Transfer box removal question

Hi all I’ve just pulled out the lt230 transfer box from my 76 Classic for a seal overhaul, the car has had the lt77 gearbox popped in at some point. Question is for anyone who has done this job.On removal I pulled off the handbrake drum off first which was a bugger as it’s really tight to get the drum off so now I’m concerned I won’t be able to get it back on, is it okay to loosen the gearbox mount so I can lower that a bit to give me a bit more clearance. Hope this makes sense Cheers Bruce

    Hi Bruce,
I may be preaching to the converted but the first question I would ask is, did you slacken off the handbrake shoe's before you removed the drum, this does make a big difference to removal and refitting, the drum can wear a small lip right on the edge and hinder otherwise rapid removal but if slackened off before hand then it should come off fairly easily.
Yes it will be ok to let the gearbox down to give more room, the only thing to watch for though is if your engine mounts are reaching their used by date then they might fall apart when lowering the gearbox but support the weight of the gearbox with a good jack.
    Regards:-
