    Evaporator housing

    Hi Guys,

does anyone know if the mounting points of the evaporator housing are adjustable (without pulling it back out). See how it hangs down evaporator side. its breaking up all the supporting plastic. I figure I might as well put this thing back together properly for a change .... so should try and avoid breaking any further plastic.

Correct me if I am wrong, but that image looks like the upper dash is twisting upwards?

    optical illusion?

My evap was similar to that - bolted in tight and stuck neatly to the sheetmetal divider running along the parting line.

The lower plastic cowl section was fiddly and I ended up removing the fans and all the lower unit, cleaning everything out, supergluing all the cracked plastic etc.

Age will weary these things. They aren't like an Series landy.

Also found a few non-standard 3rd oversize PK screws in places they should not have been considered. one almost pierced the evap core.

Previous owners can sometimes be identified as "objects in mirror are dumber than they appear"

Whatever you find, it's probably not going to be what you think it is... (that's been my story so far and fixing others f-ups is now par for the course)

It really does look bent up in the picture, I hadn't noticed that! I'll drop the evaporator back down and see if I can bend the mounting tabs (or adjust the mounts) so the gap closes up. All I'm going to do is completely destroy the plastic with it supporting any load.

I've just regassed the A/C since pulling the evaporator out to change the heater core and heater fan. I'm not in a hurry to "degass" it again and pull it apart (it works very well).

I reckon I spend 10times the amount of time on fiddly crap like this, than I do actually making any sort of repairs on the cars main systems

I reckon the old adage applies- "if it ain't broke. don't fix it" If the aircon is working, the last thing I would do is pull it apart again.

Of course, without actually seeing it, it is hard to suggest how exactly to fix it, but making and fitting a supplementary bracket out of some scrap aluminium, plus gluing on a reinforcing plate with superglue for any of the cracked plastic should work.
I have done this in several situations. (Please just be inventive

Its quite a frail bit of plastic ... probably thinner than 1mm so its breaking away at the corner closest to the door. I just need to bend the mount I think. That will cause this corner to tilt upward slightly closing the gap. We will see. You can drop the evap unit down without disconnecting the refirgerant lines. I can recover the refrigerant (bang gas) and pull it out if needed. I'll take for all of eternity to get to it though (or like last week, the night before the string of 30degree days ).
