    Exterior Door Handles

Was wondering if anyone has done a scan on the exterior door handle (talking about the alloy insert) as yet to get them made up.

I had a very random and inconvenient drivers door handle break in two over the weekend. I have since removed it and swapped it with a spare rear door that I have.

While it was out, I thought it may have been a good opportunity to have them scanned, then possibly cast. I often see them bent or about to break on both RRCs and D1, so there would be a market.

To be honest I wasn't doing it to make millions - or any money for that matter, but I know that with things like this, there are minimum quantities and thought if there was enough interest it would be worth it.

I will make some enquiries and see what the pricing is.

Yeah I did read this in my hunt for door handle replacement answers.

My only concern is that the fella is in the US, getting a bit unreliable on the replies and he wants US$180 for two.

My door handle broke because the latch was out of adjustment for a long time and instead of me fixing it, I just kept trying to force it.

That's how the majority of them break.

FWIW those handles are on nearly every british leyland product in the UK, so there is no shortage - you just need someone to send them over. Morris marina springs to mind, along with many many others.

I'm only suggesting that you don't waste funds trying to reinvent the wheel.

3D printing is still a way off in terms of being able to produce equal strength in a composite fibre reinforced plastic, and SMLS parts are cost prohibitive still, and the outlay for investment casting is simply not worthwhile, given the amount of post-casting treatment that is required to produce a finished product.

Gosh, that brings back memories ! I feeeel your pain.

The Lady Sarah had a problem with....... Door mechanism wear & adjustment. Both front doors. Shrt story... invest in some l o n g handled but lightweight pliers, loads of patience and RAVE. Bad news is...

Prepare yourself to do them every few years.

Adjustment aim is.... Door must pop open considerably BEFORE the handle is anywhere near it's full angular travel.

With time and wear, the "pop-open" point gets closer to full hinge travel...eventually co-inciding... then beyond .... at which point you pull so hard it snaps.

Or, the handle reaches the end of possible travel BUT the door is still latched. and Young Mate gorilla keeps on pulling. Die cast alloy is NOT resistant to such repeated stress... My previous Chrysler lost a handle for the same reason.

Yep, you will lose some skin, the audience impressed with your vocabulary.. but the sense of Accomplishment is... Priceless.

From memory - open to correction - the handles in particular and mechanism in general, is descended from the Morris Marina, and sadly, we can correctly infer the minor detail of quality didn't transcend 'BMC mediocrity'. -- NOT the standard one would expect from the Rolls Royce of AWD machines...

I shall think kind thoughts towards you .....

EDIT: - Spent tooo much time re-wording the above, that it's now obsolete ! Thanks for the info on Marinas

Top tip - when adjusting the exterior door handles, don't over adjust where you need to lift the linkage to reattach it. This will result in the door being unable to unlock/open from the inside or out.
    ask me how I know...
