    OK... Student hat on--

The raised gudgeon pins will ??
    stop piston rocking?
require longer rods but bore clearance?
less friction from the corresponding short piston skirts?

Well all bell housing bolts in little cover plate on bottom of gearbox in engine mounts done both exhausts done. Wiring to starter done and my sender units for oil pressure and temp in and connected up. New spark plugs in distributor connected leads in place. Tomorrow gotta go to Pirtek for an a/c hose one needs modifying as Sanden outlets different enough from my York to need fixing. Plus getting some oil cooler hose. I should get water pump gasket hopefully tomorrow. Hopeful that by 4th/5th assuming parts arrive - it will be time for fluids and start up
Oh and touching up all small bits of rust on inner guards etc rust never sleeps!IMG_8583.jpg

Well very pleased. This engine hasn't run in five years. Couple of pumps on accelerator choke on and it fired straight up. A bit rattly at first as lifters were dry but once oil pressure built they settled down. I haven't put a timing light on it yet nor done anything with carb re jets etc so well pleased with how its running with where I installed everything. No visible leaks at this stage.
Next I have to top up gearbox oil - later this week then a test drive will be in order. It sounds cammy at the exhaust.

That's sounds really nice.... the carby sounds a lot better than injection with the intake roar You must be very happy with it. Are you running a higher stall converter if its got a wild'ish cam?

Not sure re torque converter. I reckon it will be 6 months before I get around to fitting auto many things to do before further RRC work.
My RRS needs some attention its been neglected its time for some preventative maintenance on that .
Will see how it drives with the manual and go from there re what if any change required to torque convertor

At this point in time I'd opine that messing with a non-standard converter is an expensive waste of $ for no real net gain.
The costs associated with a custom converter are exhorbitant. I've been down this path with local "specialists" who are in no way what I'd call a true specialist.

These days the stator can be cnc machined from billet and made perfectly, instead of splitting and rebrazing etc.

They also overcharge for what is delivered.

I have a list of 8 places, all of which deemed a rover converter (even a modded 4.6 one) to be too hard basket and I shelved any plans to use that transmission.

what you "can" do if you are suss on it, is rebuild your box with the 4hp24 internals and be mindful of the difference in the converters between the 4.6 and the 3.9

You will lose a little with the 4.6 and the 3.9 will possibly work just a fraction too hard, but - I'd still consider an r380/lt230 combo as the best of all, and even though I like the autobox itself, I'd skip it if I were in a rebuilding mood.

Your other option for an auto is a ZF8HP and a standalone controller, but you then have to mess with adapters and propshaft lengths and crossmembers etc... simply not worth the effort when the manual box is a proven effective and robust component.

Shifting is a privelege in todays world. laziness is the auto.

we all love to be lazy in city traffic.

    use the L322 for that.
