I'm no expert on them, however I remember reading that they were derived from a boat motor and had 4 separate heads, one for each cylinder. I think jeep also used them. They reportedly suffered cronic head problems and were not as reliable as the Tdi's that replaced them after only a couple of years.
Correct ,more trouble than they are worth. Apparently the jeep VM's were an improved version and 2.5 ltr instead of 2.4.
