    p76 rebuild ??

    Hi all, have a p76 motor in bits and want to re build it.
    5 of the pistons are cracked and some parts are missing eg: oil pick up,manifold. what could have caused the pistons to crack and what tips do you guys have for a rebuild on these things please ?
    Also any tips on the conversion, its going in to my old 84 auto 3.5 Strangie, the 3.5 is reliable enough on gas but have 33" BFG,s to go under it and want to be able to push them. Is this the way to go?

    Is the 4.4 out of an RR or a P76, you'll need to make brackets if P76

    PCD on the back of the crank is different, so need to machine a a spigot adaptor and a different flex plate, or add holes in 3.5 one

    Exhaust will need mods, deck height is higher on the 4.4, so manifolds are further apart

    Want to buy a whole runner, with all ancillaries to suit RR?

    i have just finnished putting the p76 in my 2 door, it was complete so cant help you with the re-build, my engine also came with engine mounts. i also have 33" maxis bighorns and its a weapon off road. The spiggot bush does need to be changed as the spiggot from the gearbox is smaller on the 3.5, i have fitted a 350 holley and had a height drama but a bit of shaving fixed that.

    thanks for the tips, you have me thinking now what would you be lookin at for your 4.4 and is it a prob to adapt to my auto?

    Yep, nice place, was there not long ago, get in touch with some locals, they're kinda funny lookin, but very nice people and out the bush alot

    $650, with all ancillaries, and extractors, you'd still need the crank adaptor, simple machining job

    Tas frieght got a pallet down not long ago to JC (justin Cooper in Kingston) for $150ish bucks

    4.4 has reco heads 15,oook ago and was good runner, comes with new gas convertor to, Holley 350 will need a kit, didn't run on fuel, dunno why, owner just told me, I just wrecked the car

    Thanks rovercare, now you got me thinking, being a boilermaker makes the adaptor easy,
    We also bring alot of steel in from bris and melbourn so freight should be ok to.
    Just have to convince the oricle.

    You might want to think about using a rangie sump and oil pick-up instead of the deeper p76 sump.

    The old rover v8 is usually long lived. Timing chain stretch and wear of camshaft lobes/hyd lifters are 1st that need attention. A duplex roller chain kit is worth fitting.

    If you put rover heads on, you need to drill the lube passages in the block for the rocker gear. The p76 has less head bolts but that is not a problem (latter rover v8 has same number of bolts as p76).

    Holden rocker arms can be made to fit and the lever ratio gives more valve lift.

    Rover dizzy suffers from rapid wear the rubbing block on the points that reduces power as the gap closes. Consider changing to a good electronic system like gm HEI.
