which RRC

You can move the ECU on both models, although the older flapper EFI systems ECU is a brute of a thing. I used big -**** cable ties under the dash but you loose the RHS vent (bloody thing doesn't work anyway).

Don't be afraid of the EFI variants, parts are cheap for them these days and the early ones can be tuned with a multimeter by the right bloke. But like I said, the later 3.9 Hotwire version are much better and more reliable.

The 2 doors are a great fun, bash and crash model but are uncomfortable compared to there later counterparts, still better than anything else of the time though. the 4 speed Lt95 is a dog of a gearbox to live with but built like a tank. Plus they're getting rare and I couldn't butcher a 2 door anymore like I used to, plenty of 4 door rangies around for that :twisted::twisted::twisted:

so I have narrowed it down to two...

1. 82 two door with 3.5 carbs and 4 speed box, basic everything and hose out interior ;)

OR

2. 87-90 Hiline with 3.5/3.9 and ZF auto....why not live it up a bit and have all the bells and whistles

what ever I buy, the plan is to fit

LPG - tank in the cargo area so I can keep the original fuel tank fitted
snorkel
33" muddies on 15x10 rims - maybe sunnies
2 inch coil lift
2-3 inch body lift
long travel shocks
LRA flares with cut guards
bar and winch
spotties
lockers of some sort, maybe air or maxi's
rear storage around the gas tank
CB
and all the usual things

The problem is that it has to be a weekend warrior as well as a tourer, can it be both?

What ever I get, it has to be capable of hitting the muddy tracks around Tassie and the occassional trip to Qld towing the camper.

It has to be comfortable over a long distance...is that asking too much of a 20year old 2 door:p but the Hiline would eat the miles up but then the Hiline might be a bit fancy for mud bashing on weekends with the boys...what do youse reckon :(

Be fugged if I'd tow a camper all the way to QLD with standard gears, 33's and 3.5:eek:

Wait it out and but one with goodies already, it will save you massive coin;).................and preferably a bigger motor:twisted:

what do you reckon...at least a 4.4 or blown 3.9 :angel:

can you keep your ear out for a good truck, I would be happy to come over and pick one up, maybe stay for a few days as well..... or maybe a good excuse for you to come back to Tassie and fly home ;)

Hasn't been much about to be honest:(, but I'd really hold out for something with a bigger motor....but that's just me:D

As Rovercare said, best off getting one with all the gear already done, save you a ****load of money long term. I think so far on the Vog I've spent close to $10K and I had a set of maxi drive already in the shed so add anothert $7K to that (also have 4.11's fitted, add $2K or so to the toal so about $7K all up).

Personally I'm not a big fan of the Chev/Holden conversion but I'm a bit of a purist. The 3.5 TRover slog may be gutless but it's a reliable unit and handel all sorts of punishment although painfully :(

I like the 2 door Rangies, have plenty of character but sadly 99% of them being well over 20 years old will need work becuaue 1) they're old and 2) the dickhead previous owner is a tight **** ***** who doesn't like to spend money and has run them down to the ****house without any sort of service to speak of :mad::mad: this may be a bit blunt biu the majority of old 2 door Rangies are in this state. Still great vehicles but need work like most 20 plus year old LR's :o.

If you can find an 87/88 with ZF 4HP auto and LT230 tranfer would be good.:) Yea the 3.5 are gutless but are very durable. They battle to pull top gear with a load on stock tyres. Forget towing any thing more than a box trailer for a long distance .The old dunny door efi are robust as. Heaps or spares out there these days. It is the truth you can spend big coin moding these things with Diff ratios,shafts,lockers etc but once done they are awsome machines. The way I look at it is an entry Fee. As the tough parts will swap into the next Rangie or D1 you get once this one is trashed;) Plenty of engine options out there as Discos fit. As some others I'm a bloody purist when it comes to engine swaps in Rangies.:angel: So long as you are handy on the tools you will have a lot of fun. Cheers Tony.

14CUX "hotwire" is a more modern fuel injection system. One of the main features is the air mass sensor (airflow meter) detects the volume of air coming into the engine using an electronic signal. The signal is generated by the difference in electrical resistance between two wires. The air passes over the two wires - one wire heated the other not to create different resistance in them - hence "hotwire" system. Advantages are very little restriction of the airflow intake and a cpacity to adapt to a wide variety of changing atmospheric and engine conditions.

The "flapper" is the type of airflow meter from the old Lucas L-Jetronic fuel injections sytem. It measures airflow by using the flow of intake air to swing a heavy metal flap against a spring - hence "flapper". This significantly restricts air intake with loss of engine efficiency/power. On my Jag XJ6 Series III it also caused annoying problems because when starting there had to be 600 to 800 rpm before the flapper would swing round enough to close the switch that powered the ignition and fuel pump = hard starting on weak engines/weak batteries and very cold days.

okay oys and gals, the disco is sold and i get to keep some goodies for the next project (body lift, winch, lightforces, procomps, dislocation cones and CB)

it gets picked up next week, so I am in the hunt for a suitable rangie. have scoured all the car sale websites, the market place here and trading posts but cant seem to find anything suitable...yet ;)

can you guys keep your ear to the ground for something that is for sale but just not advertised widely.

I am still open to either a nice 82ish 2 door or late 80's 4 door. I know they are two different animals but I am not biased and will look at anything reasonable keeping in mind I dont want a pristine example as it will be getting modified/cut up etc
