P76 tap hot or cold front of motor???

So any of your thoughts will be greatly appreciated, i know you cant hear it so we'll have to go by my description.

its such a light sound that it almost resembles a cv joint click, i've established it does it loudly when cold and quitely when warm. its to light to be a big end although if it got worse then it could be just that. the car doesnt idle funny its smooth got plenty of power its got me buggered, i rekon it might be a lifter or a sleave?? your answers will fit in here nicely.

i have listened to the engine on the end of a screwdriver and cannot find the noise which leads me to believe its not the engine. but it clearly sounds like something is hitting something else.???

    thanks peoples.

Hopefully a lifter, push rod or rocker. May be a valve seat. If its a sleave you will soon know about it. How old is it ? What pistons has it got? What heads and rocker gear are has it got? Some times the valley can fill up with sludge and cause dramas. I put holden lifters in my 4.4 but still some times has a Tap Tap when cold till oil pressure is up. A bad lifter can make a fair noise. Tony

hey tony, i bought the engine out of a rolled 2 door, the engine has had some big money spent on it as it was evident that the engine ran smooth as.. also it was spotless in the rolled rangie, we ar'nt sure exactly of its make up but it has the square looking rocker covers on it same as the 3.9 which leads me to believe it has fuel injected heads. Interestingly its only started since the last outing i did rev the **** out of it which i learned later that 4.4's ar'nt designed for that. eeek oops. wont do that again. the problem was that the front left rocer has the funny metal breather i had no top to it and may have swollowed a small amount of water. i have since drained the oil and it has appeard just after this. it sould be sludge would it be good to put some engine cleaner through it or not???

    thanks

Engine cleaner I hate to think what harm that sht can do. More likely to do the cam in over time. You say it has only done this since you have reved the pick handles out of it You do know the P76 are not a stiff block and are prone to cracking along the cam if abused. They also prone to crack pistons. If Rangie or SDI heads fitted with rocker gear it should have a oil hole driled to feed the Rover heads. P76 oil by push rods. I wonder if it pumped the lifters up on big rev and bent a push rod.Tony

you know that could be the issue.

i know i shouldnt have reved it quite that hard. honestly the reason i was reving it hard was my BAD when i did the engine swap i replaced the vaccum lines to the diff actuator in the wrong order. mmm so i had no diff lock. i thoguht the light wasnt working and in actual fact i figured this out when the diff blew and i wasnt driving.... anyway back to subject the engine is still running fine, infact better than most i've heard. its as smooth as a 3.9 injected and i'm running a 350 holley. also there is no water in the oil so i figure the einge is ok, apart from the tap....

becuase i cant hear it near the top would you lean towards the push rod?? also is it terminal, would you reccomend fixing it asap???

Lets see what the others say as some of them have done way more of these than I have. If it is a push rod or damaged rocker will be easy and cheap to fix so may be worth a look. If its a bad lifter they can go for ages like it. Lets hope you don't have to venture further down. Let us know the out come Shout out if you need any parts as someone here will have them Tony

Last time I heard a noise like that it turned out to be a little end, but hopefully it is a bent push rod.
