The time is drawing near for new tyres. I'm pretty much set on BFG AT's (again) but undecided on size. It's an 85 classic with heavy duty springs so it sits about an inch or so higher than stock.
I know 235/85R16's will fit, but do they leave enough clearance for snow and mud chains?
Having chains spit themselves half off and getting tangled because they've fouled something tends to ruin your day.

I found that 235/85 16 don't fit. They are OK when you are on the flat, but when you flex the suspension they rub in the rear wheel arches. They will also require the steering lock stops to be adjusted as they will rub on the front radius arms.
I am currently running 245/70 16 on mine and they are just touching the radius arms on full lock. I had already adjusted the lock stops for my previous 255/65 16s, but the 245s are slightly bigger in diameter.

I spend enough time near full articulation for that to become a big issue, looks like I'll stick to the 225/75R16 size.
With the added benefit that I won't need to buy new chains.
You might want to shop your prices, I was talking to a bloke behind the counter at Bob Jane the other day he reckons there has been a huge price hike in the BFG muddies recently. 235 85 16 Went up around $75 a piece.

Trading in what's left of the 265/75 Wranglers looks to give some kind of subsidy....but it's still going to be painful.
The is a new version of the MT, heavier tyre, different block pattern that it apparently quieter, but 6-8 weeks away.
