what would you build with 10 grand

Rangies are advertised way overpriced these days IMHO. But here is my spin on this.

88 rangie - $2000 max (with rego :))
33" tyres of choice - $800 (S/H)
Cut guards and fit rubber flares - $150
2" springs - $200 (S/H)
Procomp shocks - $500
Arb lockers (F&R) - $2800
24 spline axles (rear) - $600 (for aftermarket)
Chromos axles & CVs (front) - $1000
Front and rear bar work - $400 (S/H)
Sliders - $500
Lightforce XGTs - $250 (S/H)
Traxide dual bat sys - $100
Traxide driving light combo - $150
Second battery $200
Misc stuff - $300

This leaves $50 (or more if you get the arb lockers second hand) for a carton of beer and some steaks to throw on the BBQ.

which 88 RRC are you talking about JC?

Grimace, I like the way you think but try finding a 88 with rego for 2 gorilla's....thats the hard part :o buying and haggling parts is the easy bit. If you buy a 2 grand truck, it will probably cost you that in repairs over the next few years ;)

keep an eye out for me tho.

I remember when I was looking for a Rangie, justinc said to me: Arthur, look for a clean vehicle to start with, then slowly buid it up. You can never undo the wear and tear on a vehicle that have been treted hard ;).
I followed his advice and I am happy in having do it so.
Grimace believe that he can get a RR 88 for $ 2000. He is correct, I can get one for $ 1200, but how many repairs would the vehicle need compared to a RR which have been used as a famuily car inside Melbourne or Sydney and never been offroad?
There are plenty Discos 1997 as well for $ 5000 which worked hard and also are plenty Discos 1997 over $ 9000 which have been looked after and used on the citiy only.
I know which one I would select ;)

you are right Arthur. I dont want a dunga that is going to cost me an unknown fortune in repairs.

I want a nice town car that has been well treated and then I can modify it to suit my needs without worrying too much about spending big cash on running repairs. You always run the risk with a second hand car, but I think you better your chances when you buys something with a service record that has been looked after.

no James, the Rover is for far simpler ambitions....coffee alfresco, fine dining and setting the standard that one expects when in such a position.

There will be no frivolity or messing about, the Rover will be far more sophisticated than you my friend.

I am more than impressed with ure Patrol, as stated b4 it has 2 diffs and two gear leavers, great start, but IT aint a Range rover Mate.:)

It will be great to see u behind the wheel of a Classic, Maybe we can look at buying one for spares together some time if u go down that road.

I will allways have room here for more Land Rover product.:-)

I have bought and wasted enough money on rangies, and have learnt to wait and buy stock, not modified peices of crap :mad: :D:angel::wasntme:
If you wait long enough the right car will turn up. I still stand by my opinion that any stock (which is what you want) 88 rangie is only worth $2000.

Personally the only time I would pay more is if there was a receipt for the auto being overhauled recently. Or if it had a rover 4.6 or 5L Stroker motor :twisted:

edit: and to totally contradict myself, I bought fluffy for $4g (1990) and have a tally of almost $30000 spent on mods, parts, repairs, fuel and rego and the damn thing is still stock , except for the tube front bar (none of the gear has been put onto her yet). :(

Rangies are worth as anyones is willing to pay at the end of the day. I agree with Grimace here, a decent 88 Rangie is only with a couple of grand unless you are getting a better than normal example.

E-bay is still the place to find bargains RRC's. They're was an 89 Vogue auto for sale in the sat Courier mail for $2.5K, sounds about right.

Firstly I would offer the 10,000 for a forward control I know about, but if he would not sell it, I would buy a 94 soft dash RRC--have seen these under $7000, and start to do it up with second hand gear from people wrecking a RRC.
I would put on springs with an inch or two spring lift, 31X10.5 inch tyres on sunraysia rims [I already have these sitting at home]. Would add a UHF radio, winch bull bar with winch [seen these second hand for $1500]. I might have enough left for a rear step bar, with swing out carrier. Thinking of buying one I know about for $400, its price. Would like front & rear lockers, but these would probably not be in my $10,000 budget.
I would do a home made stainless snorkel as shown in pictures in other posts [but would consider poly pipe that could be changed later for stainless, if I did not have enough of the ten grand left. I would make this snorkel my self]
