Unhappy Need Help!!!! or this is a ad for cheap rangie for sale!

    Hey all
At my wits end! I have put the quadrajet on the rangie. Now it will not run. Starts and stalls 5 seconds later. It also backfires through the carbie every time. But it gets worse I have killed the second starter motor in less than a week. At the start fine then battery gets flat hook up to jumper leads keep playing and trying to start and then the starter motor gets real hot and then no start ever again no even a crank. Let it cool down still nothing. I have had this car for 3 weeks ran on straight gas when I got it but didn't run right it ran warm all the time and had overheating issues for a while there but I solved those. I need help to get this running and now.
Here's the offer there is beer and barbie on offer for anyone that would be able to spare a couple of hours and have a look at this mess for me, otherwise its for sale $2000 ONO with a second parts car included and spare motor I've had enough I just sold one nightmare Subaru L series that would never run right and walked into a bigger mess of one that won't run at all. I Would take it to mechanic but they will not touch it because its a half finished job.
    So Someone PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Regards Kris

    Thumbs up May help

I am curious, are there any vacume / air leaks, how old is the carbie, is the timing ok on the dizzy, to be backfiring it could be blocked jet/ jets, timing or air / vacume leak. Listen out for an air leak when turning the motor over.
Sorry I cannot call in for bbq but live in Tassie.

I hope you get it sorted, do not give up as it sounds like it is a minor issue.
    cheers

Are the plug leads on the correct plugs? Might seem like a silly question but if you've moved any of them that would give you the backfiring as well.

.... Here's the offer there is beer and BBQ on offer
Lets start at the beginning .....

    When you bought it ...
When you ran gas ..... It ran fine?
It would not run on Petrol at the time?

Now the bits that you have done ...

You removed the carby & installed the Quadjet .... It won't start
You recond the carby yourself??? .....
You have the gas kit installed ???
Have you tried to start on gas??
    Have you touched the Dizzy?
What is the Dizzy timed to? 6degrees ... 20 degrees??

    Wild card Question ....
Did you touch the cam chain??
What else have you touched that is related to the above??

Can you mail out the BBQ & beer to me ??? ... Will it fit in the post box??

    Mike

May be a nasty vacuume leak?
Try this to rule out ign. Disable fuel to carby + gas and give it a wiff of start ya bastard. If it catches keep doing small pulses of spray to see if it stays alive.
Be carefull if back fire and carby goes up in flames. If it does wind it over and the flames will suck in.
The back fire is often a sighn of lean fuel or bad vacuume leak.

In the past I have used ULP in a squirter to do this but very is dangerous.

You best do this where there is no risk of a fire and have a class B fire extinguisher. They make less mess.

    To Mike 90 RR,

When I got the car it ran fine on gas, and there was no petrol hooked up for it to be able to use petrol at all.

    I haven't recond the carby,
Gas is installled, just not hooked up,
Haven't tried to start it on gas, as it is not hooked up
Have moved the dizzy a little, but it is still inline
Unsure of extact timing of dizzy

    No didn't touch cam chain
    Haven't touched anything else.

    Thanks

Have you taken the dizzy out at all? It maybe 180 out.The timing could be wrong.Have you checked to see if it is top dead centre? Im guessing at the moment but they are worth trying.Had my dizzy 180 out and it would pop and backfire when turning over.

    Beauty .....

I would try for the air leaks ... as others have mentioned

I am working on the theory that you can work the tools ... But not sure about the Dizzy

Simplest way to work out TDC is the following ....

Remove all the spark plugs except .... plug in piston 1

Piston 1 is on the RHS of motor (passenger side)

Turn the crank and when you get resistance ... this will be piston 1 comming up to compression which will = TDC

Set the crank onto 6 degrees BTDC

Now turn on the ignition .... Turn the dizzy till the points spark ... (in reverse of direction of how the dizzy turns)

Dizzy turns Anticlockwise .... when the motor runs
Twist dizzy Clockwise to set dizzy points

    Now lock the dizzy

Note which is number 1 position ... Put this lead on the cap ... and connect to spark plug 1

Put in the rest of the plugs & complete the order of leads ....

    Firing order is as follows .... 1 2 7 5 6 3 4 8 .... Anticlockwise direction

    Start car

    Mike

Footnote .... to the brains trust
If I have written the procedure wrong ..... Then correct me

Thanks for all the great info guys but one slight prob Mike its a electronic dizzy. So I cant tell when the points fire. But will try that.
Anyone got any clues on the starter motor as I am done to my last spare and don't want to kill another.

    Thanks Very much
    Kris
