    Range Rover???

    Ok this is the deal.

My first car was a 84 RR 3.5L V8 and i loved it (still have it but its in poor shape!) But then soon after this the RTA said P platers were not to drive V8's . I am nearing the end of my P's but have fallen for diesels and plan on staying that way! but my love for Range Rovers is still more then any other Land Rover. They to me are the best looking 4x4 .

And seeing Range Rovers Like 86Mud sell so cheaply it makes me wonder what are the chances of Range Rover in such good nick and level of modification popping up? is it common or is this rare. Also how much would it cost to put my 300Tdi engine in the Range Rover? as that is something i plan on doing!

    Cheers James.

    Hi Grover
I am actually after something similar. I feel too sorry for my D2 to flog the guts out of it. Having seen what other people have done to their Rangies
and how they do it so cheaply, I'd love one as a project car and something I can push a bit harder offroad. Parts for these vehicles are readily available, you see a rangie at pretty much any wrecker.
I don't think the 300tdi would be too hard to put in a classic rangie, I've seen it done before. I'd probly stick with the V8, as those rover v8's just sound awesome in the bush.

    Cheers
    Hendrik

Yeah I agree, that turbo whistle sounds beautiful, I'm yet to pull the center muffler out of the td5, but hoping to hear the turbo more then.
You might just have to look at how much it will cost you to put a tdi in the Rangie. Seeing as you come off your P's soon, you might like to keep the V8, but its your choice. If I wasn't on a uni student budget, I would definatly get a Rangie, I love them and always have and they go hard

How much would it cost to do the transplant, considering i already have the 300Tdi for the job?

I've done the 300Tdi to rangie swap, now 4BD1-T.

Besides the 300Tdi, you need gearbox, clutch, radiator, intercooler, fuel filter, sedimenter and engine mounts - and maybe something else I have missed $$$.

The 300Tdi will not fit on the chassis engine mount brackets. Need to remove the v8 mounts and weld fabricate new mounts on the chassis, $$$

While the engine is out service the head, replace rings, bearings, seals and timing belt kit, $$$. While the gearbox is out, replace bearings and seals, $$$, same for t/case. Replace clutch and clutch fork, $$$.

Fuel return line from injector pump $$.

I wouldn't do it again. IMHO the Isuzu 4JB1T, 2.7 litre is a better option.

Intercooled and pump adjusted it will provide better performance and is more reliable, robust than 300Tdi. Timing belts don't give the problems they do in a 300Tdi and are easier to replace. Conversion kits from UK, would make it an easier conversion than 300Tdi if you don't have the skills.

You wouldn't happen to know how much i would be looking at to pick up a 2.7 Isuzu and getting it converted? also what sort of figures do they produce?

    Economy
    Power
    Torque and at what rpm?

    James.
Search around for jap engine importers or for a jackeroo or rodeo engine. BTW I should have said 2.8 litre not 2.7.

Go for the 4JB1T, which are direct injection, not the later, troublesome 3 litre indirect injection engine.

In stock tune, they are nothing to get excited about (120 HP), but turn up the boost and the fuel and add an intercooler and leave similar tuned 300Tdi's behind.

There are several UK firms that make conversion kits - check the UK forums or magazines. Here is one. They are a popular conversion there.

Here is a page on fitting a 4JB1 to a rangie but he didn't use one of the UK kits.
