SUSPECT ECU OR A.F.M
I have a 88 rangie 3.5 efi, now its running extremely rich changed plugs leads dizzy cap and rotor button (nightmare that was) all still Lucas parts lol.
Any how thought it might be the coolant temp sensor but that seems to be checking out fine, it was still running **** after bridging the wires with a resistor, so the I turned my attention to the air flow meter, when I unplugged the A.F.M it started to run a bit smoother so I slowly revved it up and it seemed to get better, then out of curiosity I done some ohm testing on the wires, don't know why, didn't even know what i was supposed to be getting in the way of readings, and when Ii plugged it back up ran a little rougher after doing this a few time just to hear a see any difference at the exhaust pipe I swear somewhere there was like a click then the revs picked up and it started to run smoother. This happened when it was all connected back up. something somewhere along the line it started to read the information it need to run good again, I had already sprayed the connectors with contact clean last week and they all seem fine, but to cut this story a bit shorter I was wondering if there are any test that can be done to check if either the ECU or A.F.M are at fault here, plus I swear there is mouse **** under my front seat where the ECU is located. something here is at fault somewhere and sending screwy signals to the fuel mixture and making it run REALLY rich, ohh and while I had the A.F.M dissconected it was idleing fine (little rough) then she just stalled it was after this that she runn for a little bit more then came good. so if anybody knows how to test these things I would be greatfull for your time in letting me know how to run some tests...

mate, my '88 efi did every single one of those nastys, sooted plugs by the boxload and drank petrol like it was hand reared by OPEC. i buggad about for ages, i never did track down the faulty component. it used to get so bad it needed the plugs cleaned weekly.

it's never missed a beat since and saved me a huge bucket full of cash this season. starts first turn of the key with a splash of petrol, onto gas at 1500rpm. all 8 pots run clean straight away, no overfuelled stalling at the first junction etc.
i'd lay london to a brick upgrading that efi beyond the sinclair zx81 era oe system will cost more than gassing it.....and you still wouldn't be able to fill up for 25 bucks.
