hi
i have just broght a 88 rangie vogue auto with viscous coupling transfer case.
it has a blown headgasket dont matter as its getting a 4l sliped into it.
but it also has a pivoit shaft? hub seal oil leak.
i know rangies leak oil but id rather not have my front diff leaking whats the normal cause of this?
thanks
mark
Did you mean the seals on the swivel housings are leaking ? To be honest with you a RRC of your vintage wont leak any worse than a Japper. Main culprits are steering box and pipes to pump and reservoir. Oil pressure switch can leak when buggered. The drive line are not any worse than any other make with age on them with modern seals in them. (Not felt)
My Rangies are all oil tight except the LH swivel on my 89 that got gutted on a sand Island. Can happen to any make.
I seem to think Rovers got a reputation for leaks when the old felt seals were used and with the pre 86 power steering reservoir mainly.
You can make them oil tight. If you had a look at my Rangies and the 120. They're dry as underneath.

the front diff where is it leaking from?? if its from the pinion could be just the seal and the nut holding the pinion may need to be piped up a bit
Yeah, all the seals are cheap as chips, most available at CBC bearings, and even genuine ones are not exxy.
If your cv/swivel pin assemblies are leaking then a bit more labour is involved, but again cheap gaskets and seals.
As a fellow new RRC owner,I have found a genuine Land Rover manual for my model from eBay to be invaluable.Only around $60 inc.post brand new, great illustrationsand over 360 pages.I just typed 'range rover manual' into the search box.
I find working on the old girl a real pleasure, with the manual, and a good tool kit. She's like a V8 Massey Ferguson with coil springs!
Also the mob at roverparts.com.au are great to deal with, and actually own Rovers, and are big on free advice.
By the way,you now own one of the greatest 4wd's on the planet mate!
i think the oil is coming from the hub seal.
i know there not bad for there age and the hub seal is the biggest leak it has, it drips the steering box ant bad with it just being wet and the auto looking ok to.
it come's with a gregory's i think manual and i all ready have a geniuen one from the olds rangie which iam stealing the engine from since they upgraded to a 93.
a couple of mate's and there olds have owned them the running joke was if it wasen leaking oil there must be something wrong with.
and yeah jap stuff is just as bad but with a rangie i dont need a kidney belt
Get the RRC CD from this forum - has parts info, service and repair manuals - the duck's guts.
Invaluable, especially if you are in an isolated area.
