    Auto on LT95 Transfer Case

In the early 80s there were mods to earlier RR that allowed autos to be connected to the transfer case of an LT95 unit.

Can anyone explain how this was done (where did they cut the LT95 gearbox off) and does anyone have any pictures?

    Thanks

I haven't any pics, but from reading UK LR magazines, the modification was done without cutting the gearbox in half.

To the best of my knowledge, the main gearbox section was gutted, and after a few minor grinds of the interior, the innards of an automatic were inserted. After all, physically an auto is mostly a set of gear clusters. Apparantly there was plently of room left over, and the torque converter fitted in the bellhousing OK.

    In a nutshell

the gearbox was stripped, and then the housing was machined out to take the guts from an auto. The auto was then slid in and the tcase rebuilt.

That was the BW35 conversion. The back end of the auto box was basically stuffed inside the front of the LT95. Had a spare one that came with a RRC I bought. Pretty crude.

Ritters did a C4 / 9 conversion that has an adaptor between the auto box and the cut off transfer case part of the LT95. The output shaft on my C9 was shortened and another spline section welded on. The adaptor houses two seals to keep the ATF and transfer case oil separate. Really well put together, I really like mine.

    cheers, DL

In the late 80s I converted my wifes 2 door to auto using a kit from a bloke in Noosa . It used the B.W.35. there was no machining done. Easy but have forgotten the details. Eight years ago I put a turbo 700 in my 6x6 with the cut off transfer case of a LT 95 behind it.Ritters made the shaft and casting adaptor. Now I have a 4L80E auto with the same adaptor and a spacer from Marks still with the cut off LT95 TRB Tbox behind.

Nice! Non-electronic conversion on the 4L80?

Thanks for that - I just assumed that the gearbox was cut off the transfer case and an adaptor plate welded on to the Tfr case to connect it to the back of the auto case - them some sort of connecting shaft made to connect all the innards.

Hmm - I wonder if a R380 will fit inside a machined Lt95 gearbox case?

Quoting Garry 'Thanks for that - I just assumed that the gearbox was cut off the transfer case and an adaptor plate welded on to the Tfr case to connect it to the back of the auto case - them some sort of connecting shaft made to connect all the innards.'

On the Ritters ones it WAS cut off and the adaptor is attached with 4 Allen bolts, with possibly a machined flange (hazy memory) for support.

Even better......... they use stock trans mounts and positions......... hence use stock driveshafts.

The BW conversions moved the TC about 6" further aft, requiring new mount holes and custom driveshafts.

The link to a version of a non-electronic 4L80E is:

Yes I got it from the Wholesale mob the earlier link is to. Been O.K. so far, but we havnt been anywhere yet. Now just have to find a use for the T700. Thats why I bought the adaptor plates recently on ebay, I have an old V8 I will try to hookup to.
