Engine running but fails to proceed?

    O.K. Gurus

Last evening on the way home from work Vague, my 1985 RRc, let me down. Basically slowing for a set of lights which changed to green as I approached, put my foot on the accelerator but didn't seem to have full drive. Emergency roll around corner into side street using remaining momentum.

No forward drive in high or low range but seemed to have reverse. Then It seemed to have reduced forward drive in low range neutral, but eventually that went also.

Had difficulty reversing up tilt tray even in low range.

    How expensive will this be?????

1985 RRc - 4.6 efi, ZF auto, BW viscous transfer.

    any horrid noises?

first check the oil level if thats ok (condition and level)

after that its spanner swinging time.

Absolutely silent failure, other than the sound of the engine running and revving when it should be driving.

Fluid level normal, if not a tad high and nice pink fluid.

Good thing the tool chest is in the back of the car ATM!

There are apparently a couple of more common causes for loss of drive with a ZF and BW transfer.
One is that the splines on the viscous coupling strip , and this is what it sounds like to me in your case.
    So it is probably expensive.
The other thing I have heard of is that he input splines on the ZF can strip which is eeven more expensive.

Have a look at the transfer oil first up. If it has lots of bits suspect The first problem.

That would be unfortunate, given that I only very recently replaced the viscous coupling in Blue the 1992 RRc ZF-BW.

Would splines strip in a silent failure? I would have thought there would be some grating or grinding noises!

Sounds to me like its lost oil pressure. You may be lucky.
Time for a 4HP24ES with compu shift Seriously if its going to cost much over 1.5K would be worth a look. Imported 4HP24's are around 1K not sure what the compu shift are worth though.

    Here you go Diana

The photo is of the output shaft that runs between the front viscous and the rear output

My finger points to the shagged splines that make connection to the "center diff" of the BW box .....

My thumb is on the spline that fits into the front viscous // the drum at the back is the rear hand brake (drum) & rear output

    [IMG][/IMG]

The cost of this shaft is $360+ .... can be changed without having to drop the box

I have a load of photos of that particular area .... if this is the problem ...

Added note to the photo above ^^^^^^^^^

Those shagged splines .... Bust that and you loose all drive ....

Still can not understand how a failure where splines are sheared off or shaft shaft breaks could result without any noise or vibrations, merely a loss of forward drive but where reverse drive is still present (poorly) sufficient to reverse up the tray of a tilt-tray tow truck and that still doesn't result in some sort of grinding or crunching noise or vibration?.

The problem flowchart points to a stuck A clutch if the car moves forward in neutral, and a faulty A clutch if there is no forward drive.

Having said that, if it was/is the A clutch, then surely reverse would work perfectly...
