Thread: Winch rope

I'm about to do it.......not on a perentie but a winch exactly like your winch. .the thing I have to sort out is the connection to the drum itself, either way I'm sure five or so wraps will lock it on

You will need to check your roller set up, make sure there is no pinch point or spots where the rope can catch.

Most seem to use hawse fairleads for plasma.....there won't be one wide enough off the shelf. I am getting a custom made one from nugg_t tk suit my bar, his are billet aluminum.

I'd be interested in a custom fairlead to suit the Thompson winch as well. I've been thinking about replacing the cable with rope but haven't been able to get around the fairlead issue. Main reasons being weight and safety. Nugget would you consider making another while you're at it? Suitably compensated of course!

With all the Perenties now coming onto the market, I'd suggest there might be a real market for a synthetic fairlead.
Most buyers would probably be looking at changing over to synthetic, so if there is someone able to make these, it might be a good earner.
I'm getting my Perentie next week and I want to change to synthetic when I get it - so there is another order for a fairlead to fit it.

Plus it gets rid of weight switching to synthetic rope

Why does dynamic/plasma/synthetic rope need a hawse fairlead? Does a roller fairlead present problems?


And if anyone is switching to synthetic rope, I could use another steel wire rope for a spare.

I believe rollers are ok provided they're specifically designed not to be abrasive to the rope. I would imagine the hawse fairlead would be significantly easier to make as a custom job than specially making the rollers. The existing rollers may be able to be smoothed or something - not sure.

I will also be sticking with the steel rope, call me old fashioned but at least I know it works and I also carry an extension rope for extra long pulls.

There will be a ready queue of buyers for any undamaged cables stripped off ex-mil winches
