    What do all the letters stand for?

    Gents,

    Just reading up on buying an ex ADF Land Rover, can you tell me what all the letters stand for?
    What sort of price do these go for at auction?
    Is it true that some were totally rebuilt at a certain point, what sort of service schedule did they have while in service?
    What do you avoid and what do you look for specification wise, I would like a 10 seater, do you need to get this type certified?
    I'm in Brisbane and am going having a look at the up coming Grays auction, just looking at this point until my current car sells, anyone interested in a VW UP?

    which letters?
    • ADF = Australian Defence Force (Army, Navy and Air Force)
    • AMF = Australian Military Forces (Army)
    • ADE = Army Design Establishment (Where they designed things for Army)
    • ADI = Australian Defence Industries (formerly Government Ordnance Factory)
    • FFR = Fitted For Radio (Radio vehicle with dual 12V and 24V electrical systems and 5 batteries)
    • GS = General Service (4x4 or 6x6 and be used in all or most terrain)
    • CL = Civilian Line (same as vehicles sold to public, not usually 4X4 etc)
    • RFSV = Regional Force Surveillance Vehicle ( A 110 with high canopy roof, and a few extras)
    Lots more. Defence is like that

    I think you should buy and read this Buyers Guide (created by a local AULRO member) and then come back with any unanswered questions

    Thanks for that, funny I thought if I asked a few questions I'd get help and not steered towards buying a book for $50 +

    I'll carry on reading the posts on here.

    Apart from not buying a book, which abbreviations are you looking for?

    We can hardly help update your information if we don't know what you want to know. e.g. I have a document here with 67 pages of approved medical abbreviations. The Army would have at least as many.

    Been reading quite a few threads on here and have come across a link for Ex military vehicles, very interesting read. It's explained the history and what the letters stand for, also interesting read about the five cylinder ending and there expected life compared to the Perentie.
    Also had a good read on service and maintenance so all good there as well.
    I'll carry on reading the threads on here and shout out if I get stuck.
    I am interested to know how much people have paid for their vehicles and if they bought from an auction house if they would do it again and if they have any tips?

    I realise my questions have been asked a thousand times and do apologise if they are a tad mundane for some.

    I guess the most important thing to recommend is that you go and have a look at the vehicles.

    I bought a 1988 FFR, it had a blue slip but was missing a number of items like a tarp and rack, as well as numerous small fittings. Looked a bit scrappy and was missing its log book so ended as the lowest final price in the auctions from a number of sites. Turned out it had a reconditioned engine only a few months before, reco'ed gearbox, new front end and probably overhauled rear end. Had the log book been there it would have gone for a much higher price. The give away was the shiny engine only revealed by the personal inspection.

    By the time one pays the auction fees, buyers premium, GST, then gets it on the road with rego and insurance you won't have much change from $10,000 if not a few or many thousands over $10K.

    Most Perentie will need a new tarp in any case and that will cost more than a $1K from one of the OEM manufacturers Robco in Marrickville.

    Thank you for your reply Lotza I'm trying to sneak to an auction either tody or tomorrow and just have a look at what's what, this will give me a good idea of what I need to have finance wise!

    Do try and take someone who knows a bit (or a lot) about these trucks with you when you look at them if you get serious about buying one.
    Some seem to be hidden gems, others absolute dogs and on the surface it can be quite difficult to tell the difference between the two.
    Your wallet and soul will know the difference though.

    Remember a blue slip(roadworthy) means that the engine starts, the brakes kind of work and that is about it.
    A car with a roadworthy can still have significant problems.
    $10k for a GS seems to be the going rate. Lifespan is a long as you are will to put money into it.

    <Edit to add> this is where the buyers guide comes in very handy - has a wealth of information about what to look for when buying one.

    Not that this is a for sale site, but I am considering selling 48-852 my 1988 FFR because I have been offered another FFR with similar condition engine etc but with a winch. So watch the markets over the next couple of months.
