I've posted in the series 3 boards but have finally decided that it's not in my interest to get a series, I need the efficiency and off road ability of a defender. My car in New Zealand has been a Jeep Wrangler, I've yet to be stuck somewhere that a high lift jack and some rope couldn't get me out of but I need a place to sleep in the back. Because I need something LWB after much research I keep landing on Landys. My grandfather had a Series one and it's still in the family, I have very good memories of driving around in his truck and I cant wait to be the other Landy owner in the family.
So.... I would like to purchase a Perentie but it's fairly daunting, I am currently in New Zealand studying and moving to Australia to study again (although I am American) and I've been living in Indonesia for the past few years (confusing huh). I arrive on the 31'st of Jan and was hoping to line up a vehicle to purchase before I arrive or close thereafter. Gumtree seems to have a ton of overpriced Perenties so I found my way to the auction site. I understand to add 16% to the final cost. I have a few questions I would be forever grateful to have some feedback.
I've read up to page 10 on this forum and it's helped me greatly. I plan on adding a center seat which I've found a good thread on and other useful informative threads but I still have some questions, please forgive me if they are covered.
1. With the auctions, I have found a company KLR automotive for pre purchase inspection - anyone reccomend them? I won't be able to inspect the vehicle so I was hoping they could (Buying a Perentie - KLR Automotive) I also need someone to store it for a week. Would anyone reccomend someone else in NSW that I could arrange to pick up the vehicle. Can I drive it back to QLD without a roadworthy and have it registered when I get back to the Goldie?
2. How many times do auctions pop up, anyone think one will pop up in Brisbane in the next 2 months? If so I could save myself from the drive syd - gold coast and the hassle of interstate licensing.
3. I plan on replacing the canvas with a non-camo canvas and repainting the truck, if I have a canvas made do I need an old canvas for reference, does anyone have a recommendation for a canvas maker near the Gold Coast or Brissy or even Sydney? There are a few trucks up for auction without canvases.
Much much thanks.
-Todd
TLDR; Just read the questions 1,2,3

KLR specialise in these vehicles and i believe they would do the inspection and storage if you ask them
You will need a Qld temporary rego permit. Try the Qld roads department web site. Not sure what rhey are called but Google is your friend.
Sydney auctions happen about every 3 months, again Google Greys Auctioneers on line and they will send you reminders of auctions. All ex ADF vehicles are auctioned by them.
Robco (Google again!!) make canvas canopies for the Perentie in any colour or style you like. They made the originals and have the pattern. Highly recommended
good luck

Thanks Phil! I'll look into the temporary permits and give KLR a call today. I've been on Grey auctions mailing list but was never notified of the Sydney sale - must be because i'm more local to Brisbane auctions.
I'll certainly order a Robco then, I've seen their seat covers too but I think ill replace the seats! Thanks a ton again for the help. Are there any other canvas suppliers that are better or worse? I would love to use pvc cloth if possible or a good sailcloth and what i've read about Robco they use original fabric (which is good but I would prefer different)...

You can get covers from the UK.
How come you want to change the seats? I'm 6'2" and find them very comfortable.
Also if you are in Auckland, you are welcome to come around and take mine for a test drive. Although it might be a bad idea as I have power steering and a turbo haha.

I spent half the day on the phone trying to sort everything out. The guy from KLR was beyond wonderful, he was super nice and had plenty of good info. I will most likely bid on the ebay auction and have it gone over by PCB in Adelaide which I've called but just hit voicemail every time. I'm hoping to have it serviced by KLR and might fit power steering or a turbo depending on timeframe and also have a canvas ordered. I've also chatted to the guy from the ebay listing and he also seems super nice and trustworthy.
Just called Robco and got the voicemail, i'll give a call again on Monday.
Thanks for that, everyone on this forum is awesome!
I'd like to fit an older style bench seat and have it engineered so I can fit 3 up front. I won't be needing a gun rack
No worries!
So a separate middle seat like this doesn't take your fancy?
