    PTO winch

I lost the slip yoke , end yoke and uni joint from the winch the other day , Thankfully , just after it saved me with a long winch up a hill after blowing the front diff .

Anyway replacements ordered , keyway ordered , It just got me thinking .......How often will these keyways fail ? , should I carry a spare , I assume they fail before a Brocken shaft or uni joint ? ,

Can someone with some experience with these winches tell me what I should carry , did I loose the slip/end yoke because of a Brocken uni and no grub screw in the end yoke do you think ?
    Thanks all
    Luke

Umm, being a perentie the key shouldn’t fail (it’s not a shear key or pin in the case for my PTO), the UJ might have failed which than damaged the key.

The perenties have a torque limiter incorporated in the PTO drive, when you load the PTO up too much the torque limiter should disengage drive to the winch protect the winch components.

I vaguely remember it’s spring pressure on ball bearing that the the max. torque.

If your shearing Keys than you have other problems.

I guess that the torque limiting clutch mechanism could fail to slip for all sorts of reasons including debris ingestion & lack of maintenance.

See Para 242 on pages 64/65 in https://afmsafety.com.au/wp-content/...-661284221.pdf

It was a long day ,Had to winch up a long hill around corners , then needed to remove both axles , Because the front diff was binding badly , I had nowhere to remove them until I reached the top .......

It got me home tho ...so could of been worse .

I don't think I broke a key , more just lost it when the end yoke came off .
If they don't fail ....I may of over purchased PTO winch

    Thanks everyone .
PS ....if you need some keyway steel for a PTO winch

Luke there is no way that yoke can come off unless the grub screw was loose and then allowed the uni joint and slip joint to move back on the rear shaft and fall of the middle shaft. Just fix it up and loctite the grub screw with a medium strength loctite. You don't need to carry spares for these winches.

Good to know , thanks for that , I better make sure the others have some loctite at the same time.

    While you are talking PTO,s
Can the bottom PTO be reversed to drive to the rear instead of the front?
