    General electrical issue (non-LR)

I'm hooking up a GPS/sounder my uncle gave me hooked up to my deep cycle battery for use in my little tinny.

Apparently my other uncle's gps burnt out due to short circuiting or something. So I'm looking to make sure mine doesn't do that.

My battery box (plastic super-cheap job) has a built in fuse/circuit breaker. Will that help, or should I wire in an inline fuse I have here between the GPS and the cigarette plug that I'm connecting onto the bare wires coming out of the gps?

Yes, have a look at the back of the GPS and somewhere on it will tell you the voltage and amps that it draws (if it lists watts divide by 12 to get amps) that gives you the size of the fuse that you should use to power the unit. Be sure to get a marine rated fuse holder. Since its electronic I'd suggest fast blow fuses as well.

Just realised the cigarette plug has a built in fuse. Probably not marine grade, but hopefully will do for tomorrow.

Most ciggy sockets come with a 5 or 10 amp fuse in them....

if its standard fare wiring that I get to see for most GPS units the wiring is good for 1 maybe 2 amps constant and a peak of perhaps 5.

Ive personally seen a GPS units ciggy plug and lead catch fire when it was "run over" by the driver sliding the seat forwards crushing the cable. neither the 10 Amp fuse driving the ciggy socket nor the fuse in the plug blew when the cable shorted out. The GPS wasn't on at the time so the fair warning you might have gotten of the unit turning off didnt happen.

I have no sense of smell and between the driver asking "can you smell something burning" and me finishing my stock reply of "are you being a smart ass you know I have no sense of smell" the flames came up the side of the cubby box.

I poured my coffee on it to put it out. Not Happy.
