    Do UHF Radios get hot?

    G'day all,
I have an Icom IC440 still in its box, it has all the buttons and the speaker on the mic. Does the base unit get particularly warm? With all the controls on the mic, I figured it'd be fairly safe mounted inside the centre console amongst the spare fuses, globes, 1st aid kit and beef jerky.
Does the base unit need air space?
I haven't used a vehicle mounted UHF before, only AM CBs, and that was last century so any advice is welcome.

Have a look at the base unit. If there are ventilation holes at the back or top, then these need a certain amount of airflow.

You should be able to mount it ok in console.

should be alright in the console unless you're transmitting all the time, biggest issue with heat is when people mount them where the sun heats them up all the time

If you're worried about heat damaging the UHF, I wouldn't be eating that beef jerky.

I've mounted mine under the steering wheel inside the drop down flappy thing.

    Works a treat

edit: that's in a disco though, probably no help for you ops:

Well I installed the radio Sunday night, and used it all Monday. I learnt some new words listening to the hobbits around 'the shire'
Installation required a single 3/4" hole in the console base and a slot chiselled from the supporting timber frame for the power, antenna and microphone cables. The radio mount bracket is tarzan's gripped to the console liner, which needs a few extra staples to hold it to the timber wall firmly. I haven't yet decided where to put the microphone mount and socket. The base unit has enough room to slide from the mount for removal.
I stuck my hand in the console a few times and there was hardly any heat generated.

It can't be seen so thats an added level of security.

Hay Mark ... and we can give it a good workout on Saturday! I was about to buy the IC440 when I realised we're going 80 channels next January ...

... bought a dual band uhf/vhf programmable handheld instead. 128 channels ... got it yesterday. When the new channels are up, I'll just reprogram it ... and wait to see what the next IC440 with 80 channels is worth.
