    UHF wont TX RX

    Hi Guys
I have been trying to get the UHF working in Debs Deefer. Its a Uniden PRO 510XL.
It was very scratchy with the original antenna. It had the wrong type of antenna for a bullbar, ground plain dependant.I bought the same antenna and base, ground plain independant, that I have on my D2 bullbar. Its lost all is scratch background noise but doesnt TX or RX.The TX lights are working.
Is it a case that its not earthed well enough on the bullbar, despite me having to drill the mount hole larger???
    Thanks
    Andrew

I had a similar problem last year. I checked my antenna coax connections and found out why I am not an electrician! (they were a little sloppy, wires were shorting out )

Redid the connectors, with a bit more care and it works fine now...

    GOOD POINT!!!
I did cut the screw end off the antenna lead and re-solder.
    Will check it out.
    Thanks

I have one of those in the garage. I haven't put it in anything yet, as it's an AM unit. (26.9-27.4MHz)

You will find the sheild of the coax is the silver or brass sheath around the outside of the inner core. This has a bad habit of having a loose strand or 2 that will find somewhere to short out, usually underneath where you cant see it.

Disconnect both ends, and check with a multimeter. There should be no reading between the core & sheath, and while you are there, check the cable from end to end as well.

Also, make sure the antenna base is earthed properly. There should be 2 little spikes that are designed to dig into the metal of the mount for the base. These should be connected to the sheath of the coax.

Once the antenna & mount is all back together, check the coax at the radio end. You should have nothing between the core & sheath, and a dead short between the sheath & ground.

dumb question, but you do know that the PRO-510XL isnt a UHF, right? its a 27mhz AM CB radio set, very incompatible with a UHF in terms of communicating with one

And if you've tx'd with a bad antenna connection, you've probably stuffed the radio

After you have tested the cable it would be a good idea to test with someone who has another am set to see if you have any rx/tx if you have damaged it txing with a bad ant you may still have tx but only very short range 50m or so also makes testing eazier if you know you have someone on channel with you
