    Saga of the iPhone

6 am Friday and couldn't get back to sleep so thought I would share my experience of Apple products with you.

Local shop that I had my name down for an iPhone eventually admitted they only get one phone a week and I was 5 on the list so I let my fingers do the walking and found that JB HiFi at Melrose Park had stock.
"Be there shortly, put my name on one please".

Filled out the paper work and "Oh sorry but Telstra is off-line, will have to finalise first thing tomorrow". This was on Wednesday morning.
    Back Thursday morning.
"All OK, in a short while your old phone will stop working and the iPhone will work".
    How gullible was I

Later that day, phone still not working. Phone up...
"OK, bring it back. We did have a batch of faulty sim cards... etc.".
Girl turned the phone off and back on and it is asking for a sim card number.
"How do I know what it is" I say when asked.
"It is on the card in the box" she says.
"Box is at home" says I.
Back home I go... Phone acceps the number but still no network. Everytime I turn the phone on I have to put in the sim card number

So I will front up at 9am with everything in hand and leave it with her for a while.

In the mean time... I can use the phone via my wireless network to send and receive email. I signed up to the app shop (and was that fun. NOT) and downloaded Skype for free and can now make Skype calls.
I just can't make ordinary common and garden phone calls!

    But wait, there's more.
Tried to install iTunes on a Windows 7 Pro 64bit desktop. No go.
A Goggle shows that I am not alone on that one.
Do I really need iTunes? Most probably not. If push comes to shove I should be able to install iTunes on my old XP laptop.

So the saga continues. Will let you know if "they" can get it working.

    The good news is:
If a shop tells you they have a waiting list - forget it. Just keep phoning around till you find someone who does have some. In Adelaide several JB HiFi shops now have stock. Usually those that are not in a big complex like Marion - they sell out pretty fast.

I signed up for the NextG $49 plan without data and added 3GB data.
All up is $63.50 a month which gives $400 of calls and 3GB data - I want to use a laptop while travelling via the phone.
Never realised that you can make up your own "plan". Always thought you had to take what is on offer, not so.

as much as i hate itunes, i never had a problem installing it in win 7 pro 64.

there is a 32 bit version and a 64bit version (tho both show up as 32bit apps in the process list)

    what issue were you having?

Until I read this post - I'd never even heard of HTC phones. Must be living in the dark ages, as they have about 25 or 30 models on their website.

Both my brothers have the latetst & greatest iPhones, but I am sticking with my 5 year old Blackberry..... It rings - I answer - I talk. That's enough for me!

How do the HTC phones compare to the Apple? Or is that a Ford vs Holden type of question?

You sim card issues are all normal, you can disable the pin in the options on the phone if you want, but it sounds like telstra have just not activated your new sim i also get this a bit when setting up new phones at work. This should only take a few minutes if you call them up but i am usualy dealing with telstra business support not consumer so it might be a little slower.

    iPhone vs HTC

    Hi all
I had an ITC and it was a great phone - until it landed in a pool of water! Got an iPhone and it is an amazingly easy, useful phone. Love the range of aps! My wife got the HTC Desire at the same time and she loves hers! There is a write- up in 'Choice' about mobiles and both come at the top of the list of what to buy.

Phone now works like a phone should.

Different girl this time. It seems the that the new sim card number was not entered into the Telstra system - it still had my old sim card number which explains why my old phone was still working but not the iphone.
    -------------------

    iTunes install.

When installing I get this problem:
iTunes Installation Problem 64Bit Version, Windows 7: "Could not open key: UNKNOWN/Components..." causes install to fail - Ecademy

Then when I try to run it, I get:
Apple Application Support 1.2.1 is installed, iTunes requires
Apple Application Support 1.3 or later.

I assume that the new version of iTunes should update the Application Support module but cannot do so.
Although Application Support 1.2.1 appears in the list of installed programs it is not possible to delete it.
Reading what I just typed it occurs to me that I might be able to install an older version of iTunes that is happy using Application Support 1.2.1
