There are a lot of posts on various forums about the sound system, or lack thereof, in the Defender. I have done my research, spent my hard earned and come up with the following solution which I am VERY happy with.
It all revolves around a space saving subwoofer. I went with the Pioneer TS-WX210A as it is mounted vertically and with dimensions of 250 x 265 x 110 mm there are plenty of mounting options, even in a 90.
TS-WX210A Space-saving Amplified Sub (150W - 2010 Model) - Pioneer Speakers & Subwoofers
I have mounted the sub in the small gap between the bulkhead bar and behind the cubby (with enough room to open the cubby lid), facing rearwards. See pic.
The sub is mounted to a new head unit with bluetooth (includes a handsfree phone system), ipod in and sub out wiring.
And then because I have soo much bass and little cash left I have just upgraded the existing 2 front 4 inch speakers. They don't seem to make 4" splits anymore so I have left in the existing tweeters on top of the dash and put new 2-ways in. I went with these:
Alpine Electronics of Australia
The whole system sounds excellent and I am amazed at how powerful the space saving sub is. The little 150w unit would have enough carry to be mounted in the rear of a 130.
It isn't cheap but I definitely recommend the sub. The only trouble is that now I don't know where to fit my UHF...
Also now I can amusingly say that I have a 90 with a 9 speaker stereo.

Karl I got the following Sony: Sony 200 Watt MP3/CD Tuner With Bluetooth - CD Tuners - JB Hi-Fi - Smashing Prices!
The RRP on the Sony site is a joke though. I think I paid about $200 at JB Hifi.
It is a very good unit and was easy to install. The phone works well enough too.
