Yes, it's supported. My Golf has it, though it does depend on the station as to what is actually displayed. Some don't show the song/artist.

    Couple more questions...

Do I need an adapter loom to plug it into the Disco1 ? If so what loom and where do I get one...

How can the unit actually be mounted, solidly, out 5mm ? And if it can, is there a surround or something available so that it looks more "factory" than "dodgy" ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

If the replacement uses an ISO plug then it should just plug in, otherwise Aerpro do looms to suit most makes of stereo to ISO loom.

    Site says
    Installation TypeISO 1 DIN Size
So should be a straight plug in....

Assuming that the current pioneer system in there has been fitted with an adapter and not by cutting and shutting the loom... If the latter I might pay someone to fix it....

I'll be having a look in there during the next few days sometime..... hope its good news....

    Bugger. Not good news.

    PLUGS

The pioneer stereo in the car has a plug which is 6x2 layout.

Would that be what's known as a ISO plug?

    Looks similar to this

    (except 6x2)
harness plug is kinda sorta similar to this....

Certainly the plug on my new pioneer system is totally different.

Car stereo ISO plug has 3 connectors A B and C, most head units have A and B together.

Picture attached is of a head unit cable AB type and the back of the D2a factory single CD player with ABC type.

Female connectors are in the car.

RDS is supported on quite a few FM stations...the (still original) Alpine head in my MY99 P38 displays it! (which I only discovered once Scouse had enlightened us on how to fiddle the buttons to change the "market" setting

however this new gadget looks the goods... how do you stop thieves removing it...does the screen detach for example to reduce the temptation factor?

The screen folds inside the unit, and the front face is (as far as I can tell) also detachable.

I wouldn't have thought stealing car stereos was as popular now as in the past - stick on GPS units etc being an easier target ?

Aside from the wiring my main concern is how to actually mount the unit far enough forward so that it is solidly fixed (ie won't slide out) and allows the screen the clear the dash when opened. Ideas? Tips ?

Mine's a D2 but I would think its the same as a D1. I used the supplied insert (surrounding bracket or whatever its called) and mounted it about 5-10mm out from fully in the dash. Then bent back the tabs around the insert to hold it firm. This allows the screen to open nicely but still holds it firmly in the dash. Looks fine too.
