A quick question. When did they start getting called "head units"? A head unit used to be a thin face panel with the rest of the unit completely separate and elsewhere in the vehicle ie. under the seat or in the glove box.

I think perhaps that's what you decided to call it? The head unit for me was always the entire unit on the dash. Head unit connected to amp, speakers, cd changer, even parametric eq on some vehicles in the 80's.

The face panel is 'the face'..... but call it what you like.

Its only been in the last few years I have heard of them referred to as head units. When I bought my first stereo back in 82 it was simply a stereo, they weren't even advertised as head units back then.
I did have a 2 way radio back then which had an actual head unit and the main box connected via cable sitting under the seat. The head unit was like a normal "face" but only 10 to 15 mm thick.

At these prices, it's only a matter of time until one of these ends up in the D2.
